Very WIP, so I’ll be laying out a timeline first. Written in the academic style, though considerably simplified for everybody’s reading pleasure. Here are some major events you’ll expect to see more organized later. BD is the term for “before discovery,” while AD is the term for “after discovery.” They’re comparable to BCE and CE in our world. This page is the hub for this fanfic and will be in constant flux; but the subpages are much more stable. Check here often but those only once in a while.
- 2000 BD: The Temple Builders civilization falls of unknown causes. Majority of Temple Builder cities disappear or lose all traces of magic. Exceptions are found on Harmony Island and the floating Epic Subspace. The common scholarly consensus is that these “Magi” as they called themselves, were what evolved into the modern day Floatlings, but a growing minority faction argues that linguistic evidence points it to the extinct race of dragons instead.
- 700 BD: Formation of aquacultural Merling city-states along western coast. First known sedentary Merling society is the purple city-state of Kaza, but others soon follow. Major players include Blue Merling city-state of Yunzu, only known originator of currency in the form of Sand Dollars, and Purple Merling city-state of Po, which later evolved into the Takyatsian Empire met by human arrivals centuries later. Both are small and irrelevant at this time.
- 500 BD: formation of Starfish Alliance, between city-states of Kori (Red), Noi (Blue), Toro (Purple), Suki (Purple), and Osoro (Blue). Starfish hegemony extends to large parts of northern Shipwreck Shore. Last traces of habitation in city-states of Kaza, Kobiru, Jenza, and Moro disappear at this time. It is unknown whether this is related to the Starfish Alliance. Only Kaza and Moro have been tracked down for evidence.
- 400 BD: Elves develop agrarian civilization by utilizing specific aural triggers to control Clik-Clok population.
- 357 BD: Starfish Alliance collapses into civil war. Toro leads Yunzu, Po, Sayo, and Nami against Kaizu, Kori, Noi, Suki, and Osoro. After sacking of Toro, Po conquered Noi and Kaizu. Leader of Po, Tatari Takyatsu, declares the Takyatsu dynasty Kings of the Sea and Land.
- 324 BD: Beginning of the reign of the Ice King, the only known “kingdom” of yetis. The Ice King is said in Yeti legends to have been a tribal chieftain who united the other tribes and constructed a formal capital, ruling with an iron fist before someone roughly translated as “witch” or perhaps “enchantress” convinced him to change his ways. Paleographers debate whether she was actually a magic user or the term is simply a colorful descriptor for amorous activity.
- 74 BD: Clik-Cloks develop native musical tradition and seize independence. Elves retreat to Northern Firefly Forest. The tribes that later become the Bleet and Babbal states take control of the south.
- 0 AD: Arrival of Matechean Empire human colonists on southeast shore. Survey vessel Andromeda crashes on what a diarist at the time calls “the shore of our shipwreck.” Human sailors are brought inland after trekking across the shore, but their diseases soon ravage the native population, and they are thrown out.
- 116 AD: Takyatsian Empire is destroyed by Jonas of Agabrel. He takes the epithet Maestromblade in honor of the conquest, beginning the popular trend of human settlers taking “Prodigian” last names. Purple Merling remnants reluctantly confederate with Blue and Red Merlings and seek refuge in the deep sea.
- 167 AD: The Lamplight Order massacres the large Bleet city of Dol-Dok. Deforestation of Southern Firefly begins. Lamplight Town is established on Dol-Dok’s ruins. Remaining Clik-Clok disperse into Northern Firefly, pushing elven remnants even deeper north.
- 173 AD: A branch of the Lamplight Order, the Candle Knights, splits off from the main force on the issue of treatment of the natives. After a brief but costly war their remnants escape to the Spires. Small populations of former Candle Knight loyalists remain there today, having created a system of levers to allow for human habitation. This had the unintended but welcomed side of effect of exposing the slime civilization.
- 204 AD: The Leporine/Vulpine Schism. The Vulpine and Leporine tribes, long rivals of the Clik-Clok chieftains, had allied with the Lamplight Order in purging the Bleet and Babbal. Vulpine tribes adopt more and more human customs while Leporine tribes ally with the elves.
- 223 AD: The Coliseum is built atop the charred remains of what was once the Great Ma’ah Obelisk. Miners begin settling in the Shiverchill Mountains in search of crystals. The famous chef Charles Muggs conducts his expedition into the Bonfire Spires, his diaries and cookbooks inspiring culinary tourism to the region decades later.
- 245 AD: Project Skywatch is announced to control local weather through manipulation of ambient storm, fire, and water magic in the atmosphere. Outcry is immediate from all native groups.
- 246 AD: The Great Catastrophe. Human civilization off Prodigy Island collapses. No known survivors. No expeditions to the mainland return.
- 289-304 AD: The Order of Influence rises and establishes alliances with the Merling Confederation and the Elven Kingdom. Order operations stem from movements to push out the xenophobic and rhabdophobic Lamplight Order and establish more native governances. War ends with the near-complete dissolution of the Lamplight Order but also a suppression of the extremist Order of Influence. The Academy is founded to train humans and Prodigian Aboriginals alike about magic.
- 379 AD: Second Influence War begins. Puppet Master utilizes shadow magic to mobilize Order loyalists and control more animal monsters around the island. Academy is shut down by Order operations.
