Dried Tears and Stale Blood[]
The actions of the Lamplight Order between their arrival on Prodigian shores in 112 and their dissolution in 304 remain controversial even today.
In many ways they represented the changing zeitgeist of our society; once where there was great hatred and fear there is now acceptance and curiosity. Yet no organization can said to have had better indoctrination than the Lamplight. Tensions between the many races of Prodigy Island raged on even after their decline. The Clockwork Town Massacre, the One Prodigy Movement, and the recent incidents of hate crimes during the yearly Springfest have attested to this.
Years ago, I visited a village in the rural Shiverchill reservations. Yetis are naturally long-lived species, which often double the lifespan of humans. Most still remembered the Crystal Wars, when the mining magnates of the human towns launched extensive campaigns exterminating the yetis to obtain the rare and valuable minerals abundant in the region.
My guide there, an older yeti named Bhardag, told me of his times under miner rule.
”They destroy yeti’s identity, yeti culture,” He said, through a thick accent. The Yeti language has no first person pronouns. “Bhardag daughter, Traagon. They force Traagon to go to their schools, learn their ways.” He spat on the ground. “Human culture strong, yes? How strong are human that they make false coat and they need colorful rock to survive? Yeti no need none of that. Live simple lives, yes, but better.”
Bhardag’s description was vivid, but ultimately a view shared by most native Prodigians who still live traditional lifestyles. From the bright lava moats of the Spire to the secluded forests of the Elven Kingdom, the consensus is generally that human ways were in no way superior to the lifestyles of natives.
How was it that the Lamplight Order’s fascistic, xenophobic rhetoric made such an effect on humans but such small bounds into assimilating natives? How was it that certain cultures, the Foxes and fairies among them, came to adopt human ways anyway? How do we solve the modern problems of racism and segregation?
These are questions only history can answer.
New Matechea[]
In the year 112, Matechean explorers, funded by the imperial government itself, landed on Waterfall Island on Shipwreck Shore.
