Breeding pets is a fanon, pet-related feature for Prodigy available within the FourSevensRueful Version.

Overview[]

Monsters/pets, fanon monsters/pets, buddies, and fanon buddies are the only entities that can be bred in this version. No monsters/pets-buddies pairs, whether canon or fanon, are compatible (they cannot produce offspring together); in the case of epics released from the Rueful's Epics Update, they breed using Pet Compatibility Types and cannot reproduce their own species--pairs of the same epics species, or pairs of epics released in the update, cannot be reproduced. Unlike in real life, no monsters/pets or buddies can experience live birth or massive spawning, but rather produce a small quantity of large eggs at a time. The record maximum amount of eggs that can be laid at a time (maximum clutch size) is 3, the minimum being 0, both outer parameters true for both monsters/pets and buddies. Enter two compatible, fertile monsters/pets or two buddies in a Breeding Slot pair in the Nesting Grounds and wait for successful egg lay; this results in a successful breeding event.

Breeding Priority Statistic[]

Monsters/pets and buddies that have the capacity to breed have a breeding priority statistic that produces bias in the species of monster/pet or buddy within an egg if successfully laid. The statistic is not altered by previous successful or failed lays. The statistic does not apply if a single participant is present in a daycare slot in the Nesting Grounds or if both participants in a slot pair are incompatible and/or at least one is not fertile. Because buddies and monsters/pets do not have traditional genders, that is not a compatibility issue within fanon Prodigy.

Breeding probability for a species in heredity, p-hat (p^), for compatible entities is calculated by multiplying the desired species' breeding priority (p) by the sum of all potential offspring's grandparents who were of that species (weighted by 0.5 each) and of all potential offspring's parents who were of that species (weighted by 1 each).

p̂ = p{0.5[Σ(presences in grandparents)]+Σ(presences in parents)}

A pair of brown hamsters with all-brown hamster parents will produce a p̂ of 12, the maximum value of 12 (which is 3(0.5(4)+2). The minimum value is 0. A species is most likely to be selected for if p̂ is at least 8.

Monsters/Pets Compatibility[]

Pets and monsters such as canon epics, those not of the highest possible evolution stage in their chain, pets from Ultimate Member Boxes, and pets provided by Wardens are currently incompatible for breeding under the FourSevensRueful version; fanon epics from the Rueful's Epics Update have compatibility types and can reproduce a compatible partner's baby species. All monsters/pets fall under a single compatibility type, each, and can only produce eggs with others they are compatible with. Unlike buddies, pets must meet a minimum level to be compatible.

Buddies Compatibility[]

While some buddies are able to breed and reproduce their own kind, the vast majority of buddies are ruled out of breeding because they are mechanical, expensive, rare, or too young to reproduce.

Buddies are compatible for breeding within Compatibility Types similar to those of monsters/pets. All canon buddies that are members-only will not be able to breed, produce eggs, or have their eggs hatch if their player is not a member.

Basilisk Disease, Decreased Fertility, and Infertility[]

Both monsters/pets and buddies may experience breeding illnesses, Basilisk Disease, decreased fertility, and infertility.

Decreased Fertility in Pets[]

If a monster or pet has produced three times the normal litter size for any species (all species of offspring stack) within 72 hours, the pair will be tired and unable to make more eggs. This effect disappears after another 24 hours pass, but the recovery process accelerates mildly when moved to a medical slot.

Basilisk Disease in Buddies[]

Because it would be difficult to add Basilisk Disease and its intended effects (originally negative) to monsters/pets, they are not affected and cannot contract it.

Trivia[]

Rueful got the idea to introduce buddy breeding after realizing that Pokémon sometimes (in some games) follow their players and appear active in Daycare Centers in the canon Pokémon Universe.
Basilisk Disease is named after Roko's Basilisk, a thought experiment Rueful "fears the potential results of (because the thought experiment is deemed 'infectious' online) as much as they fear contracting illnesses."
Basilisk Disease was inspired by the feature of Pokerus in modern Pokémon games. They wanted to see how infertility, diseased, and decreased fertility would affect player behavior if they were to put it in a Pokémon-style game.
Unlike Pokerus and real viruses, there are no known different strains, variants, or types of Basilisk Disease.
The progressive stages of Basilisk Disease were introduced because Rueful knew that cancers affect animal bodies in different ways depending upon how long the host experienced it and how well their bodies are prone to reproducing mutated daughter cells.
The final stage of Basilisk Disease, Stage NCAM, stands for "Nobody Cares About Me" and is a reference to Care NLM from Petscop. Stage NCAM is not yet implemented, but exists as a critical form of Basilisk Disease.
Epic buddies affected by Basilisk Disease do not cause harm to their battleable version.

Improving Gameplay[]

If all features of Rueful's version of breeding in Prodigy were implemented, trading may be encouraged to be implemented as well and cause and increase in development activity. Players are more easily able to obtain duplicates of more common buddies, promoting swaps and use of a trading feature. This, in turn, may excite players and cause further appreciation of development amongst the player community. The Basilisk disease will add a plague-like dynamic in the Prodigy world, which might cause players to care more and have more sentimental value in their pets, buddies, and monsters they might not own or have rescued themselves.

Math Factor[]

Breeding itself will not require mathematics, but reaping the rewards of breeding--eggs, does sometimes. Some pets may require magic and mathematics to hatch from their eggs. Questions will need to be answered correctly either to speed up the hatching process of an egg, cause it to hatch, improve conditions for hatching, etc.
