Chapter 1: Leave my loneliness unbroken)[]
(The girl hit the tree with a axe, sending it crashing into the ground like a broken toy. She didn't care, though. The sound of its splintering was music to her ears. She'd never had much of a childhood or family and now here she was, alone in the woods with her axe.
She didn't exactly mind the loneliness, but sometimes it got to her more than it should have. This was one of those times.
Sitting down on a log, she rested her axe against her leg and began to pick at the skin around her nails with her wand. She looked up suddenly as footsteps began echoing through the woods behind her. What was that? She thought. Was someone following me? I know I heard a noise when I hit the tree… It took her a moment, but her eyes finally focused on someone emerging from the darkness of the trees. “Hello? Who are you?” Ellie called out, grabbing her axe quickly. The girl stepped forward, her hands raised in surrender, “Hey! My name's Sam, I'm not a threat or anything!” Ellie hesitated for a second, then she lowered her axe. “Okay. Well I haven't seen anyone else in ages so...” she said, gesturing towards her axe. Sam nodded sheepishly and sat down next to her. He put his hands in his pockets and fiddled with his fingers. After a minute he spoke, quietly. " What are you doing out here? "
Ellie paused for a long moment before answering him, "I... don't really have anywhere else to go, besides my old family home." She stared ahead at the treeline, where they could just make out the shape of a large house. It stood at the top of a cliff, overlooking the forest. It was made of stone, and wood, it seemed as though it was in bad condition, but somehow that seemed fitting given how far off it was.
" The firefly forest is quite pretty at this time of day, isn't it? " she asked, changing the topic. The boy looked over at her questioningly, but didn't answer for a while.
Eventually, "Yeah," he said, looking away again. "But it's also... creepy." "You think the forest is creepy?"
"Well..." Sam trailed off. "No... I don't think it' s creepy. I just feel... watched. Like everything goes quiet every once in awhile. I mean there's lots of people here, but it still feels kind of empty, and lonely." he shifted a bit, "It's scary.""Oh." Ellie wasn't sure how to respond to that. It wasn't exactly the most reassuring thing, to hear someone describe a place they've lived their whole life.
"Anyway-" he started, standing up. "-I can show you the way back if you want, I know you're probably tired." Ellie blinked. The boy offered her his hand and helped pull her to her feet.
" No thanks " she shook her head. " I'm perfectly fine on my own " She paused, " And besides, you don't seem like the friendly type." Sam smiled, "I suppose you're right" Ellie looked down at her axe. " But thank you anyways. For helping me out." She picked it up and held it close to her chest, as she began to walk towards her home, Sam trailing behind her. "And by the way, your name is...? " "Ellie. Ellie Ivysnap." Sam nodded, " That makes sense, it suits you" They walked in silence for a few moments, the sun would begin to set, casting a golden orange glow over everything as the last light faded. Ellie glanced down at the handle of her axe as she walked. It was made of maplewood, but the wood that used to be there had been cut down to an acceptable size. The metal was dull, and the tip was sharp and dirty, but it worked just fine. "
Ellie glanced around as they walked, the only things in sight were tall, thick trees with leaves that hung in a dark greenish grey mass. She couldn't see any monsters. The smell of smoke and the soft rustle of leaves filled the air.
the moon was now almost full and cast a silvery light on the forest floor as they approached the edge. Suddenly, Ellie noticed something, "Wait!" She ran across the grassy plains and stopped in front of an oak tree. "Why is the trunk split open? Isn't it closed normally? " "I dunno" he shrugged. "Maybe it fell? Or the wind did it?" Ellie shook her head. "Something isn't right here..." She mumbled. Her instincts told her this was a trap. Sam frowned, "Do you need help getting back?" "No," she answered quickly. "You should keep heading towards the forest. See you later, Sam."
She made it to her house, and slammed the door shut behind her. Ellie dropped her axe with a clang, letting her bag drop onto the ground. "I need to get help" She said to herself. She went to grab her bag again, then she froze. Something felt... off. She knew something was wrong, even though there was no reason for it.
The house felt oddly quiet. The only sounds coming from the crackling of the fire and the steps from her truckle. Ellie slowly picked up her axe, holding onto it tightly as if it might disappear if she let go. She kept walking until she found herself in front of her front door. Taking a deep breath, Ellie twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open, walking outside. Everything felt off, yet calm. There was no one here. There were no footsteps, no signs of forced entry. Ellie shivered, then shook the thought away, " i'm probably just paranoid " She murmured to herself. The forest seemed darker than usual and there was a strange breeze blowing through, causing her cloak to flap behind her. Ellie took another deep breath and stepped back into her house, closing the door behind her. It was eerily silent inside.
Ellie carefully set her bag and axe down on the counter, then pulled out her wand. With a flick, the lights came on. It was late. She glanced at the fireplace, the orange flames dancing cheerfully, she began to walk upstairs to her room, hoping for even the slightest bit of sleep; she tucked herself into bed, falling asleep rather quickly surprisingly. )
=Chapter 2: (Flight or fight)[]
(Ellie woke up, still concerned about the night before. She rubbed her sleepy eyes as she tried to wake up. She was lying in a small bed, with plain grey walls and an orange bed sheet covering half of her body. It was too early for her tastes, but she figured that she needed to wake up at least slightly. She sat up slowly, pushing her ginger braids to the sides, so she could sit cross legged on the bed. As soon as she lifted her legs, she noticed her socks were gone. Ellie furrowed her brow, picking them up curiously, then realized it must have fallen off during the night. They weren't her own anyway. They belonged to somebody else. She slipped them on, then swung her legs over the side of the bed, getting up and stretching. As she looked around her bedroom, the events of last night came rushing back to her, Sam, the paranoia, the strange breeze.... Ellie shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside. She grabbed her green beanie and jacket from her closet, tossing them on, then headed out the front door, making sure to lock it behind her. The cool morning air sent shivers through Ellie's body as she headed over to the creek, which was still flowing peacefully along the banks. The grass was wet beneath her feet, leaving tiny little puddles everywhere. A few fireflies fluttered by, their wings making a light tapping sound as they passed by the creek.
she felt in touch with natures energy. The forest was alive, despite it being winter. The fireflies reminded her of her brother, the ones he used to use to play in the woods with her when they were children. Ellie remembered them playing hide and seek through the dense undergrowth, laughing when he always found his way around the trees faster than her. Ellie chuckled quietly to herself.
Her brother was gone now, he had drowned when he was only 7, trying to swim for shore. The other kids said that his heart gave out in the water, and the undertow dragged him down further; nobody knew for sure what happened, all we know is he died from drowning. He was only 7 years old, after all. The story had caused much grief and pain, for a very good reason. His mother blamed herself for what happened, and she often visited the river to reminisce.
Ellie shook her head. Thinking about that made her sad. She never talked about it much.
soon enough, it was once again night time, although the sky hadn't completely cleared yet. It was nearly 11pm. There were hardly any stars, not even twinkling ones. Most of the stars were covered by cloud cover and the few that were shining were pale and faint, barely able to be seen through the darkness. The forest still held its eerie atmosphere; then Ellie heard a swift sound, and the breeze from last night came back, stronger than ever. Ellie shuddered a little, grabbing her axe. She scanned the area around her. Nothing was moving. Still, Ellie decided to stay alert.
Ellie sighed, sitting down underneath a large Oak tree that towered over her. She leaned against it, leaning forward with her elbows. After a couple minutes, she began to look around, looking for danger.
she jumped as the crunching of leaves sounded nearby, turning her gaze towards the source of the noise, seeing someone walk out of the bushes next to where she was seated. It was a boy, about her age. He had messy purple hair, and glasses that reflected the moonlight.
he didn't say anything for a while, instead staring straight ahead. Then he suddenly spoke, " Hey." Ellie stared at him, blinking owlishly, " What?" He tilted his head to the side, " You're not supposed to be out here." He paused, tilting his head to the side, " Are you lost?" Ellie raised an eyebrow, " No. Why are you asking?" She watched the boy roll his eyes, Ellie would finger her axe, going into a fight or flight position, just in case.
" Look, you don't belong out here. Nobody does, really. But you, you're different, somehow. I can tell." Ellie narrowed her eyes at him, " Who are you, exactly?" The boy looked down at his shoes.
" And why is that any of your concern? " He asked, sounding annoyed. " Tell me who you are, or i'm gonna have to use this lil' thing " Ellie snapped, waving up her axe. He looked taken aback, " My name is Dexter. " He answered, still sounding irritated. " Okay Dexter. I want to know who's in the forest at this time of night and what your intentions are." " I can give you a better answer if you tell me who you are first. "
" I'm Ellie," She answered. He frowned. " That's a nice name. " He said, very sarcastically, Ellie became furious at the remark, clenching her fist tight, resisting to lunge at Dexter with her axe.
Then the breeze returned, catching Dexter and Ellie off guard. They both whipped their heads towards the direction of the air currents, and saw something, something almost inhumane, yet still sentient. )
