A Key to Uncertainty
[]

Avane started the battle by enveloping herself in a dome of flames, and I had to leap back farther than ever to escape the heatwave. I landed far, and attempted to use a weather spell, in which I called Shadow Shroud, to even make darker of the area besides it already being nighttime. It only extended throughout the clearing, and I could see well still, making Avane a bit blind. The flaming dome was already completely gone, leaving her now gleaming mahogany scales/skin steaming with power. One damaging spell from her could even injure me for life. Now that she was blind, she could only use her sense of hearing acute (gargoyles have large, pointed ears).

All she did afterwards was send a volcannon spell right at me, but I could easily dodge them as fissures a large as those take about three seconds to form and release ground magma. I decided to end the battle quickly with some cool rain, which would simmer down Avane's powers to basic. casting the spell, freezing sleet poured from the dark clouds above that I used for my shadow spell. I could still see Avane through all of the obscuring features of the weather, and she was now lying with her back up, horizontally on the ground. To buy myself some time, I leapt over to the battered campgrounds and grappled one of the minor vines supporting the tent. I ripped it free, it made a slight creak, yet not enough to be heard over the sound of the wet precipitation falling to the ground. Taking the vine, I tied it into a noose and was able to restrain Avane to the ground in no time, with her unable to use a spell to get out. Her wings here tied down too, so she wouldn't be able to make a strong flap and break free.

After that, the effects of the battle disappeared, and the sky was full of bright stars and constellations of early Fall. Avane suddenly stirred, croaking with an exhausted voice, "Well, I didn't expect this to happen. So, why didn't you defeat me?"

I answered, "I don't know...I just want to wish to know what you're looking for."

Avane grumbled defensively, "Why would I tell you? You're probably working for the Trialmasters."

"What? No way! Those wizards want to restore the Academy and capture way more innocent monsters that way."

"Ugh, that's how I actually feel too. But I'm not giving you more!" Avane Brimstone spoke aloofly.

"Is there any way I can get to know about what you're doing?"

"Fine! If you can get me untied by the end of the week, get me a crate-ful of grapes from the Autumnal Vineyard, feed me at least a few apples each meal I have tied down, and give Queen Goo-lia this note I have, I'll tell you," Avane stifles to say, struggling, and spitting out a saliva-coated scroll tied with a flaming tangerine ribbon stamped with a golden crown wax emblem. She continues, "...I'll tell you about my entire scheme as long as you keep it secret afterward."

I quickly took the scroll and put it back into the tent, and returned. I wanted to look like I would take up the offer eagerly.I hesitated to answer - I would have to let the bounty free after I give her a crateful of food stolen from some wine-making farm I don't know about, and I'll have to feed her handsomely as well as get her a foreign world leader to messenge her something back? Impossible! However, if it means I'm in on some secrets, hopefully, it might be worth it. I resorted not to thinking any further, as I was getting hungry out of my wits. I announced, "Cloudmath, Scamp, Cobnut, Paul, I'm done! You can return now. We're having chicken!"

I heard no sounds around me except for small struggling heaves from Avane, and I saw nothing for a few minutes. I decided to go over to the edge of the clearing to pick up the crate of chicken I forgot, and went back to the campsite. Since none of the children were back, I decided to use a little storm-element power and strike a lightning bolt down onto the remaining flammable parts of the fire pit. The crack came down bright, and only lasted a moment, leaving a nice, flawless blaze starting. Avane squeaked a little with fear, but made a small sigh as it was only a small bolt. The entire clearing was brighter, but something from the eastern side of the clearing's edge was glowing...

I was curious, so I got up to the the crate of chicken somewhat safely away from the fire yet to cook in it without the full thing catching flames. I walked over, crouching to see four figures, humanoid, hunched in fear as one in the middle of them was the one glowing. With a flash of lavender light, I saw the creature enveloped in energy evolving!

The light then grew dim and then dark, with nothing left but the eerie silhouettes of three small humanoids now yelping in delight as the fourth and largest one let out a shout of happiness. They all then turned their heads to me, as they probably were so caught up in their pow-wow that they didn't notice. The smaller eyes of the trio of little humanoid monsters were all dilated, black dots in pairs that seemed to have magnitude, vibrating and shaking. In total, there were six of them. The taller pair was of the evolved creature, with a pitch black sclera and a ring of golden iris on each. One of the smaller of the quartet wearily spoke a familiar voice spoke, "Is that you, mother?"

"If it's you, I evolved just now!" spoke of the hopeful second voice, also familiar, but this time slightly cracking and a little more mature.

I cooed back, "Who are you four? Are you Cloudmath, Scamp, Cobnut, and Paul? I was calling..."

The four creatures surfaced from the forest, rustling about as they stepped out of the underbrush. They were in fact Cloudmath, Scamp, Cobnut, and Paul, but Cloudmath was no longer a hob. Cloudmath was a Wick. Not only that, but I've seen wick before - they look like wingless gargoyles yet as though they derive from ancient creatures in which hold gems and float in the air...but now they look like lavender beasts with darker purple front paws, tailtips, and crests of fur. Cloudmath is a little different now that he no longer takes after what would be his mother's side, probably a pure gargoyle. He used to look just like a regular hob would, but now he's slightly odder. He has mauve, scaly fur, and his claws and back are spiked with shards of black and gray. His forehead has a small, glowing red horn in the front. His underbelly is mostly gray and matted. He looks nothing like any monster I've seen before - maybe the clutch of eggs came from a hybrid mix - maybe since all of the children look just like a regular version of their species as though the mother was a mix of all gargoyles and the father was compatible yet different. Now that Cloudmath is a half-wick, his siblings may be half-shardic, half-fissural, and half-flaria. The father may have been a dragon - he looks more draconic now that Cloudmath is growing up. He's more tall than any of the other wick I've seen, like a few inches taller - about three feet instead of two-and-a-half. I myself am only about six or eight feet tall.

Whatever - I still care for them anyway! I gasped and ran over, embracing them. Cloudmath was a bit spiky, so I had to not crunch them as I used to do. I let go and spoke quickly, "Oh my goodness, congratulations Cloudmath and everyone. You're all growing up and you've only been alive for a month. Come on children, let's have some chicken - it's late. And I have so much to tell you."

We all sat down and took some chicken to cook. I took one of them and walked over to Avane, who I found staring at us like we were fools or inferior monsters. She growled, "It took you long enough. Who are these?"

I replied, "These are my adopted sons. I found them as eggs a month ago in Lamplight Town. What about them?"

Avane spoke unhappily after slowly chewing a large bite of her prey and swallowing without taking her stink-eyes off of me, "Well, it's nice to meet them."

I answered, "Well, I guess it's time to introduce you five to each other. Kids, this is Avane Brimstone - our captive. Avane, these are Cloudmath the wick, Scamp the rascal, cobnut the scally, and Paul the puck. Be nice to her, she will be our prisoner for the week."

"Hi?" cautiously spoke the children to Avane in unison.

Avane replied, "Same to you. So, is this your entire family, luminex?"

I cheerily reply, "Yep! And the name's Nike."

Avane just stared at us and we ate the rest of our meal in silence. Someone should really have replied, but I think that Avane was in a bad mood. I put out the fire and the four children already crawled into the tent to sleep. I checked her, and she was already frozen, probably playing statue like most gargoyles do when they're tired.

I decided to do so too, and there was no need to say good night as nobody was awake after me...except for Cloudmath, who was still awake yet unstirring, probably in deep thought. I silently unfurled the scroll's text which was still lying around, and read,

"Dear Avane Brimstone (harbinger of the borderland),

I hereby decree that you have been invited for this year's Monster's Edition - Worst-Ever Cookathon as a competitor. Your objective is to gather any food ingredients you'd be cooking before the competition at the end of October this year, 8018, bring it here, and attempt to cook the food I'd find most unpleasant in honor of the death of my previous cook, Cebollini. Hint-hint, I have your favor! Your first competition will be district-wide, hosted on Halloween, 12 AM, inside of the household at 1 History District, with your home district being Lamplight Town. You would need to bring at least a crateful of your ingredients plus what we provide. You'd also need two assistants, of any district, and must be registered on the form below. All must be monsters. All tools will be provided for you. The winner of your district would move on into the zone-wide competition and then the championships semifinals, then the finals. You must bring it all the way! The judges for your first conference are: Slurpy (slime and my current cook), Smoky Rubygaze (wizard and last year's reigning champion of the lamplight town cooking conference for wizards of worst cooking AND best cooking), and Sir Vey (NPC merchant, well known from Lamplight Town).

~Queen Goo-lia

= Waiver =

Please sign below and bring to your first conference at the area I told you about above.

Main competitor (you): Avane Brimstone (harbinger of the borderland)

Assistant 1: Twilight Fallenleaf (harbinger of the borderland)

Assistant 2: Willow Wintertree (harbinger of the borderland)

PS: BRING OR YOU GET PUNISHED!

= Note On The Back =

Dear Queen Goo-lia,

I would absolutely be so happy to have you in favor of me in this competitions. I would love to provide one extra asking, what would be the prize, if any, of winning any of the competitions? I would like to know as soon as possible.

~Avane"

From that moment on, I had an odd suspicion that Avane hunted for gold. Of course everyone wants gold, but a bounty would be the only type of monster hungry for wealth and for fame. How did she get this invitation anyway? She must have been known by Queen Goo-lia for something! And she wanted a crate full of grapes, probably the only ingredient she needed for the competition - what a slacker! I quietly rolled up the scroll, made it neat, and went to sleep. Cloudmath was still awake when I got very drowsy, staring up at the tent's ceiling without moving.

The next morning I woke early yet refreshed, Avane heard a few meters away, now struggling despite her having went into a frozen statue state only a fraction of a day ago. The children were still sound asleep, except for Cloudmath, who was gone. I crawled out and whispered a good morning to Avane, huffing with rage, and I went out to find breakfast, which I assumed was what Cloudmath was getting too. Wick and most dragons are both pretty hungry and need twice the food they require when younger, especially those who recently evolved. I figured that since Cloudmath was pretty much the most powerful of my children now and that he matches in spell powers and the will not to faint as much as most of the island's monsters, I decided to travel around and find some twigs for fishing spears and kindling, which I'd need to smoke some early-morning funkeel for my children as they love its juiciness. Therefore, I traveled to the Swing Bridge, just a little bit away, only to find a weakened River Caller collapsed and unconscious in the middle of it. There were no wizards around, thankfully, but I decided to see what was wrong.

I could hear the muttering of a constant, shallow breath, and the weightlessness of its body under its cloak. Its own staff was lying on the ground, its small orb of water on top gently floating around the staff's crown. I checked its cloak for any marks as signs of battle, only to find the bottoms frayed and singed out as though a beam of lightning struck it from under the ground. There was more; I could see that one side of the coat is covered in a dew covering leaves that were plastered to its side. The other side has a small circle freezing ice still clinging to it. Most of all, its hood was burnt and tattered with a smoke scent lingering around it. One more thing, a claw-mark gashed into the front chest area of the River Caller. I smelled it, very close to being of dander and a musk similar to those of a scaly yet furry creature. It was fresh, as though the caller was injured last night.

I decided that it was up to Florafox to save it, as there was an overpopulation of these humanoid neeks, callers, and creators, throughout Prodigy's two islands. I went on and into the Northeast Area, with a trio of lumbering old hotpot aimlessly circling around the same spot of grass until disturbed. I decided to even to try going near them, so I clung to the sides of the area and found a large pile of these twigs. I grasped them and silently made my way back into the camping area, and set down a few into the fire pit with one left, the longest and sturdiest one, held in my paw. I unsheathed one of my paw's claws and began to sharpen one side into a nice point, and it only took a minute for me to see that the spear was complete. I examined my paw for splinters, and there was none. Satisfied, I looked about the area, and nobody was stirring, except for the now hollering Avane trying to free herself. I was then able to eventually get everything back to how I wished it to be, and decided to head to the southern shore. Hopefully, there'd be nobody here...

<< Apprentice's POV >>

It was already a month into my stay and October is finally here. I'm already a professional at all of the first-grade mathematics skills I'd require to learn due to hard nights of study with my fellow students. I've also already gotten a large amount of wardrobe piling up in my house, and I already have Creela evolved into an Aureate with a Dragic I found in the arms of an already deceased student as well who'd already evolved into a Tarragon. It's sad that the children are almost all gone - we started with about 250 students and now only about 225 are left...twenty-five children have already been lost either to the evil nature of the islands or - have been captured and used as mind-controlled slaves for the Order of Influence.

I've already battled long and hard, already with Starbit Blast, Star Cluster, and the Prism Blast spells under my belt along with the basic fire, water, and ice relics. I already have quite a few staffs, and I even was able to forge a custom wand that combines the rare power of the ivory star, the sunburst wand, and lunar staff. It's actually quite rare and I find my spells five times better against foes due to a strange and magical force imbued into every wand called "damage bonus." It also is imbued with a rare spell called Steam Sprinkler, in which I can use rarely. I never have actually cast the spell before, but I've heard of it. I can't wait to use it one day! I also have been wearing sea sword items often, as I find the water to be a magical place where I think my power resides in the most.

Besides all of that, today I am stationed with other students I'm friends with and I'm traveling to Skywatch. Here, it's a lonely mission with one new leader, and my team is expected to rescue quite a few storm-element pets as well as others from bordering areas to then evolve through battling hard in the afternoon. In the evening, I'm expected to go with my friends to Shipwreck Shore and leave them at a so-called day-care area to let them grow and breed, using them for their eggs both for a food supply and to hatch as baby monsters to teach how to harness their powers from an early age. So far, I've already made it to Skywatch with twenty-four others. I have our roster here:

  • Mission Name: Project Genetics
  • Mission Data:
    • Teams Involved: 1
    • Team Name(s): 1st Grade Class, Group A, Team Steam
    • Objective: Rescue as many pets as possible in the morning. Evolve them all successfully in the afternoon. In the evening, bring them to the daycare in the Shoreline of Shipwreck Shore. Put them in for 100 Aeroes each, collecting the eggs from the previous team's batches. Ship them off by Tarragon or Aureate to the Lost Island by nightfall, collecting gold (currency) and chicken (food) in return. You then must return the gold to Crios and Mira in the Coliseum by midnight.
    • Labor Intensity: 3/5; this will be a very hard mission for the students of this roster, but not as hard as rivaling teams.
    • Expectations: Meet all requirements and get 10% of the gold for the team 90% goes to Crios and Mira. You'd keep the rest. Each of you gets an equal portion to all of each other out of the 10% that you get. Anything less, you get nothing.
    • Team Steam Rules:
      • Respect the leader the most. This person worked hard to graduate from the Academy, any teams, or volunteered their possible lives to protect you on the mission(s).
      • Respect the elites the second most. These wizards on Team Steam are chosen naturally by the rules of it. They have at least two pets with them at all times at hand, with at least one being evolved if possible. They themselves are also deemed as wizards and MUST be wizards. They must have a minimum friendliness level of 1/5.
      • Friendliness levels are deemed naturally and barely change. Don't be jealous of how low yours is or how high yours is. It is based on how well you are able to stay on the good side of the team. 0/5 is "evil," 1/5 is "insecure/bully," 2/5 is "shy/antisocial," 3/5 is "averagely kind," 4/5 is "extroverted/welcoming," and 5/5 is "lively/loyal." You are more trusted by the team members that you tend to be more like, as 0-2 out of five are usually in one side while 3-5 out of five are in another. The leader always determines which side to be on or to favor more.
      • Obey the leader within reason. Only be a deviant if what they're rule-making is unjust.
      • Our old motto is, "We let nobody rise higher than us. Mud, ice, lava, dust, and smoke can't stop us. Nobody can beat us. If they do, revenge is what happens next."
      • Our new motto is, "Mud, ice, lava, smoke dust...defeating other teams is our bloodlust."
      • Teammate rules:
        • Never betray your team unless it means to keep everyone safe. Defend teammates with your life. However, friends in other teams must be defeated if they break our/their code.
        • Do your best to trespass in others' territories and workplaces, steal their fame, etc. However, within reason that doesn't risk safety of anything. Your must defend your training territory, though.
        • Elites get dibs first on things before servants. Leaders are the first priority over elites, however.
        • Make sure to only destroy life in Prodigy for survival only.
        • You must be at least in the first grade to be a team member.
        • Before you are allowed to become an elite, you must watch guard over your teammates' sleep for one night in silence. With the first sight of natural sun, you may speak.
        • If you wish to have more than one pet, you are expected to have another already that is evolved at least once if possible. If you are catching and already evolved pet, this doesn't matter.
        • If the leader is separated, retires, quits, etc., the first elite to call dibs will be the new leader.
        • If an elite retires/quits, or is in critical condition, hold a vigil for them for the night. By midnight, a new qualifying team elite must arise only if there is less than five elites left on the team. Otherwise, the vigil is to be held for the night and no more elites will need to be chosen.
        • If a leader from another team or class calls a gathering, all must come if they are mandatory. All made by a Trial Master are mandatory.
        • Challenge other-team foes that dare to 'cross the line.'
        • If a lost item, place, or other-teammate is found, adopt them into Team Steam. Use them to our advantage.
        • A respectable teammate doesn't mame or murder foes with magic. Mame and murder are cruel acts only for tyrants.
        • A teammate must keep to the new motto, and live out the life of a worthy Team Steam member!
        • Initiation into the team and other events are below, with the script out below on this guide.
        • There are to remain 25 lower team members, no more, no less. You can all votes to kick members with the final decision of the current leader as long as you are an elite or higher.
      • Leader guidelines:
        • To your best to your ability, obey the teammate rules.
        • You are fully responsible to the lives of the elites and servants you lead, as well as their belongings.
        • Lead within reason; don't do anything to endanger anyone on the team.
        • Follow your home team's rules if you belong to another faction or organization, as long as none of their rules override with Team Steam's.

Roster Information (MY NOTES, FOR APPRENTICE ONLY):

  • All arena accompaniers have left behind their pets to help with the job, attempting to level up on their own through their journeys.
  • Harley, Hailey, and Halsey Thunderer are triplets, so are their Creela. They are only slightly nice to you, they don't care about you and fighting them would be difficult. The three only interact with others if gossip is involved. They all like and hate the same foods.
  • John Lifefire, Thomas Powerfire, and Jimmy Growthfire are all brothers, from age order oldest to youngest. Their dragics aren't related at all and strangely have attained different statistics. The boys are actually very skilled at fire spells but never unlocked it themselves to full power. They can still defeat Pitt, Jonathan, and Thompson in a wizard battle, six-on-six, however. The orcish trio of children are meaner.
  • Gogo, Magnes, and Talia are cute :DDD Their pets are very powerful though and like to attack me when I'm around them. I especially dislike Magnes's Gloricious because of his nasty pecks he gives others, but that isn't the reason why Magnes took him out of her party...I have yet to know why.
  • Willow is pretty nice, but the least powerful of the elites of the team. Her hair, as her name goes, is a little oily. I think behind that mop of green-gray locks on her head is a smile, I think she likes me.
  • Smoky Swiftblade is one of the coolest of all people in the class. Her pets are one of the most powerful and she is too; she somehow has a Dragos wand, but I don't know how she got it. The only person that actually knows that she's a demigod is me for some reason; everyone else thinks she's human.
  • Kaddy forever! Katrina and Codyen are one of the most renowned courting couples on the team. I'm surprised that they're even together - they are so very different. Katrina is popular but mean, and even shunned her weaker pets and vows never to use the ones she finds dumb again. Now, she's a bird-fanatic and wished that she chose Soral as her starter...for the only purpose to have guard-birds to swoop down on her enemy classmates. Codyen is also a bit popular yet mean, but he looks very attractive and gets a mob of girl teammates to follow him wherever. He only accepts those that are team elites.
  • Jennasaurus as well! Jenna's very pretty and very powerful, but not as powerful as Smoky. I don't really see why a shy yet popular person could date the pretty much only unpopular (besides me) elite teammate. Carlossaurus is also pretty weird - he almost never takes off his various costumes he changes daily for fun and team support.
  • I actually decided to rename my Aureate when it evolved from Creela into a Celesteate, just to fun. Auri-chan was also predicted by the people with insectoids to be able to eventually mate with one of the Celesteates from the Academy archives, one of the Thunderer's Creela as their evolves forms, or Katrina's Glowy.
  • I think I would finally reveal my gender to you soon - haha, I kept you here waiting for so long. I, Apprentice, am male. Yay, ima boi...I hope you enjoyed the surprise.

So - I guess now that I've got you all caught up, this is basically my everyday life reviewing the guides and being an elite on my team. You see, there have been many divisions of teams out of the students and natives in the area, and we all work against each other (when we aren't allied) to stop the evil of the Order of Influence from raining down mind illusions any further. Further, we have grown for a month in separation, with approximately fifteen teams formed out of a quarter of a school. In this month, we've trained all of the fifteen teams to work against each other, for this reason I do not know. However, I do have stories to tell of my encounters with all the other fourteen teams. So far, there are a solid, concrete list of them:

  • Trial Masters (all of the Trial Masters, aka Trialmasters, together in this organization. They are the heads of the current sane government, with most only mere child prodigies. I have only encountered a few, and they are all pretty diverse.)
  • Champion Union (all of the very well-known prodigies and powerful people on the island, and do as they wish yet against the darkness. Their team is pretty loose and is known for repeatedly not following the orders set by the Trial Masters. This team is very loose and almost nobody works completely together unless they are close friends or romantic partners...most offer up being leaders on other teams temporarily.)
  • Leading Volunteers (a rare bunch of people that are very diverse and isolated, but are willing to work together and offer up their chances of becoming leaders. No students are in this team. All of these people are pretty famous yet require others to battle for them in tight situations.)
  • Rogue Monster Resistance (a team full of monsters with the powers surpassing those of average wizards. These are the rare few monsters that don't call themselves in a team like this, but are known to work somewhat together as freed or unaffected monsters that do not fight for the Order of Influence's side. Instead, they do other things that might not even be directly battling against the Order. A few have been seen working together and calling themselves a team. In the presence of young wizards or humans, they do not fight them.)
  • Team Vapor (an elemental team that uses strictly of water and fire spells)
  • Team Steam (us, we loosely work in a coordinated fashion and have a pretty unpredictable state of battle style)
  • Team Mud (an elemental team, a rival of ours, that uses strictly of plant and water spells)
  • Team Ice (an elemental team, a rival of ours, that uses strictly of storm and water spells)
  • Team Lava (an elemental team, a rival of ours, that uses strictly of plant an fire spells)
  • Team Smoke (an elemental team, a rival of ours, that uses strictly of storm and fire spells)
  • Team Dust (an elemental team, a rival of ours, that uses strictly of storm and plant spells)
  • Team Frost (our team's greatest rival and even in power, a very tight team of Shiverchill-Mountains-based wizard students trained hard in every element and hold control of rare and powerful new experiments yet to be unleashed to us. They love to target us every time we go there and take hostages, some of them trained even better when they have gone out to join their team instead. New pets, equipment, and spells are their main focus to make a new and "better" world where they steal all of the fame. I predict that one day, they'll grow so string, that they'd be more powerful than all the other teams and take control of the fight against the dark side.)

Oh no! I've actually only encountered twelve teams. Oh too bad...the other three I have yet to find when my team isn't occupied with any missions. I hope that one day I can actually graduate from this team and be recognized for something so great, I could break away and join the Champion Union because I'm so powerful, or the Leading Volunteers and get even more fame...or get held hostage and join Team Frost, where I can train even better under their elite wings...but most of all, I absolutely one day want to become a Trial Master. The first day of my classes (remember), those powerful people were so incredibly cool! I actually got to know their names - Captain Aaron, his younger brother, Treasure Hunter Carter, Aria Strongrunner, her younger sister, Brianna Wintersong, and even that Brianna has a secret friend named Brianna Wishsinger, her different form, in which she can do something nobody outside of the Trial Masters have ever witnessed before. And their assist with the amazing Champion Union's Crios and Mira. I've been so great of fans, my favorite elements of fire and ice (for Crios and Mira respectively) as well as water (inspiration from Auri-chan). Should I tell you of some of the past few events? Whatever, I'll provide a few. Oooh...story-time!

<<Apprentice's Flashback - Day Two of Island Journey, Sept. 7, 8018>>

This was one of the major events of my quests so far. It was only the day after we spent the day with the Trial Masters and the Champion Union duo. I woke up that day, refreshed, with Auri-Chan (Creela) in my arms. I rubbed my eyes and immediately I was no longer blinded by the unnaturally bright late-summer light of the morning sun. I realized that I had woken up not in my own dormitory, but rather Swoopy's tribe's barracks. You reader probably haven't heard of this area before, but it's inside a very large treehouse completely concealed by the foliage of the bright oak leaves bearing the treehouse inside. It was more formally named as a floatling colony when it was originally created, but with the incorporation of floatlings welcomed with wizardfolk, it is now not only barracks used for floatling soldiers (who were only equipped with books written in a strange, "Sylvan" language only creatures like Vinequeen could read, catapults with cannonballs as the Floatling tribe was even prepped for defeating a stray Titan or two, and primitive weapons like pebbles, sticks, and glass shards from the aftermath of their own wooden homes), but rather for them to share with wandering wizards of a worthy cause.

Light of all wavelengths filtered through the student wizards' ward, and everyone else had already gone down to the lowest level of the three-floored treehouse for a morning briefing to tell us what to do. I overslept as always, a fool. I remember in Kindergarten I was even late for other activities because I overslept during recess, my only time for napping. Now I was a wizard in a still very unfamiliar world where I don't even know the names or identities of the people I wish to save the world against. It was only yesterday that I learned the basics of the island and nothing more. I sat up for a few minutes to ponder, but then snapping back to reality when Creela bit me - hard. I let out a slight gasp in pain, recoiling my right arm. Creela bumped into my shoulder that had he bitten arm to nudge me, forcing me to look at the long ward of roughly thirty cots with blankets and pillows, now all folded up and made into something nice. I was the deviant. I would be in so much trouble! I rushed out and around and did what I had to do, an sprinted down to the end of the ward (the very opposite of where I slept) to climb down a rope-and-wood ladder to the bottom floor. There, everyone was standing close in a crowd around the familiar voice of Noot barking orders.

I quickly stepped back in line when I got the gist of what Noot was talking about. All I was able to hear was basically all that was important out of his morning speech, I luckily missed all of the jabber and commotion of the crowd being formed in order for this to happen. Noot started to speak as soon as he quieted ever crowd member for the first time, "So, everyone. Good morning. This will be your first morning that you'll start on your official program, in which was carefully planned out by the Trial Masters themselves, into something called a teaming program. There are already fourteen teams that have already formed, all groups of wizards, non-wizards, and powerful members of the island that had already formed our own. Since we get our morning the latest, you all woke up the latest, so now is your last chances to form a team. And what is a team, you may ask? You will work together as a group of young student wizards and other supporters and train hard as people who practice magic. You will face foes of other teams, and you must choose your rules, what to do and what not to do, et cetera. There's roughly 300 people, human wizards excluding floatlings, who are joining these teams as a whole, and there's about thirty of you here. The floatling tribe, with my good friend Swoopy as their leader, has decided to step away from their possible choice to form a team because of there already being themselves as the only Floatling Soldier Squadron there is in existence. Therefore, most of you will be human or demigods or others and you'd have a choice to do what you want. However, you'd have to survive the rest of the year on your team and take orders from the highest team, the Trial Masters. These people are the ones who had decided all of this good stuff and will have you people to do the menial work for them."

A young floatling who was standing nearby shot up a tendril (these are hands for Floatlings, because they are technically plants that evolved from Vinequeen/Arboreal/Saplette from what I've heard, and I have no idea what those monster thingies are either) to ask a question. Everyone turned to look at her, as she was basically a different color floatling than usual - her basic body was saffron yellow and she looked a lot like Swoopy, yet with upper cheeks sprinkled with almost invisible freckles and instead of a cotton-puff on her head, a dandelion was in its place. I guess since puffs of old dandelions look like those on the heads of old floatlings, dandelions are on the heads of the babies. She spoke in a deeply floatling-accented voice (sounds a bit different than what you'd usually hear in your dialect), "What does menial mean? And why can't I join a team? It sounds fun!"

The crowd parted in two, with me following the left side of people, and let Noot become visible. He answered, "Dandy, you're too young to join. Plus, you're already destined to become a floatling soldier one day. And maybe wait for the time you get into school to learn that word, okay?"

My face burned with rage. Racism? It's absolutely not okay to keep any intelligent life form away from their dreams! How did I even know that Noot, a fairy guide creature, would invade the house and home of these almost-homeless cotton-spore critters show racism to a little floatling and get permission to use it for us anyways? I absolutely hated this camp - I didn't even yet know its purpose. There's already some slavery we somehow signed up to do that promised us magic, but this isn't magic at all! I spent my year trying to get an education of an eon's time, and I just agreed to possibly risk my life to join a team and learn magic, do whatever, and possibly have everyone die in the end? No way! I'll give Noot some time to finish his speech and make my final choice - I either stay and stay pleased or I ride a whale hopefully to yet another island where I could actually get home.

I suddenly realized that Dandy the floatling girl had already left in tears and the crowd was getting back together for more of Noot's lecture. I reluctantly listened, because what choice did I have? Noot rambled, "So, back to the team thing. The whole reason of this team program is so you can learn at a fast pace without having stress or any possible real danger unless required. The Trial Masters also wish to have you doing some good work and effort to fight for the great cause - hurt the Puppet Master, Pippet, and other unnamed magical creatures that want to hurt the island and hurt us all back for no reason! In other words, the great cause is to abolish the island once again of this evil "Order of Influence" that has lingered around for so long, that ever since the Academy was built and then destroyed, it came. If we can work for the cause just hard enough this year, we might be able to defeat the Puppet Master, Pippet, and every remaining force of the Order once and for all, sealing every evil into a dimension where they cannot escape or harm our world any longer. We did it once," Noot coughs artificially, "because of the Puppet Master able to escape," coughs again, "so we're trying to find a way to make it so that nothing will happen that's bad any longer. Will you people want to help the cause and save an entire island from forever ruining the itself and possibly the world?"

A tumultuous cheer suddenly made an uproar in the room. I decided to contribute. The noise echoed so loud, I think that even everyone in The Lost Island could hear! We would make our own team! Noot asks, "So all of the wizards here that wish to join, please fill out some forms I have for you and return them to me by 10:00 AM, in about an hour. All late ones will not be accepted immediately!"

The crowd swarmed over to Noot as he snapped one of his hands and an entire stack of quills, ink wells, and application scrolls filled everyone's hands with a few. we all orderly passed them out to each other and eventually all filled them out. All I remember from the form was this:

Team Program Application Papers

Name: Apprentice

Grade: First Grade

Role:

(A)) Would-Be Academy Student

B) Attending Wizard

C) Academy Graduate

D) Other (please fill next to here)

Race:

(A)) Human

B) Other (please fill next to here)

Do you have any ideas for a team name? Write why next to it. Give as many as possible that you truly wish to identify as, and they will all be considered. A first, second, third, semifinal, and final vote will be counted.

  • Team Steam, b/c team is a cool combination of fire and water and ice altogether!
  • Team Awesome Wizards, b/c it sounds cool.
  • Team Amazing Magicians, b/c it also looks kewl.
  • Dragon Squad, because a squad is cool as well as the appearance of all kinds of dragons makes my heart pound with excitement!
  • Toxic Team, due to poison being something I'd love to make and use on others.

What rights and rules do you wish to have in your team? They will be disapproved or approved based on the Trial Masters' wishes. As many as you wish for can be put in below!

  • Able/allowed to be hostile to other team within reason.
  • Win the favor of the Trial Masters, whoever they are, and get the most gifts/supplies.
  • Get at least a good amount of food, clothing, and weapons against foes.
  • Betrayal of the team results in a trial by the current leader of the team.
  • Have me as the team leader.
  • Allow dating within the team.
  • Right to the least powerful/effort-exerting people to earn the least favor.
  • Work for your treasures.
  • Allow to have fun.

That was pretty much all I filled out, and eventually, everyone turned their in in the text ten minutes (surprisingly fast for a lazy team). It took barely any time for Noot to scan through everything, and eventually he was seen scribbling down all of the team name ideas on a large, tattered parchment paper. After Noot was finished, by about ten in the morning, he had already filled out all he needed for us to take a poll. We were first all silently handed out a poll with sixty-four different choices that he approved, from what I've seen. Some included,

I actually decided to vote randomly, and I was ordered to choose two. Since it was a majority vote, the titles with the most votes moved on, but this time, thirty-two choices remained. This would be the second vote.

  1. Team Steam
  2. Team Awesome Wizards

  2. Memers
  3. Deserters
  4. Desserters
  5. Sweetones

  12. Glacial Overseers
  13. Guild of Fire
  14. Guild of Water
  15. Guild of Earth
  16. Guild of Air

This third time was also random. Yet, one of my choices is still left, yay! Since Noot had an error, we'll have to do a fourth voting round before the semifinals and finals. This time, eight choices would be up.

  1. Team Steam
  2. Memers
  3. Deserters
  4. Desserters
  5. Sweetones
  6. Last Reserves
  7. Glacial Overseers
  8. Guild of Air

I actually was allowed to choose two, so I chose for Team Steam and Glacial Overseers for the pre-semi-final. Here are the voting choices for the semifinals:

  1. Team Steam
  2. Glacial Overseers
  3. Guild of Air
  4. Memers

And here was the final vote choices:

  1. Team Steam
  2. Memers

I was so incredibly torn that I just decided to vote on my own team, Team Steam. In anxiousness, I turned in the papers for the final time. It was already ten-thirty in the morning and the mood was still pretty exhilarating in the room, that it felt like happy thunder was rolling in the distance. No wonder, it was actually happening! With one loud bolt, a large tremor made the treehouse creak and shudder in its own fear. After the shaking stopped, and we had tightly secured all the ink wells shut so none of its would spill the precious distilled fluid that comes from a "Squarrel," as I'd heard. All of the final voting papers were turned in, and Noot finally got up from the ground he used as a writing board and cleared his tiny throat. Everyone suddenly trampled over each other to get close to Noot as he'd be delivering the official team name.

Noot spoke, "Well, after the tremor, I kind of lost track of the votes because of an unsteady hand, so I had to make up what I had and the result was that your team's official name would be the Memers!"

Was this really happening? My name idea got so far! However, moments later, another blinding flash filled the room behind Noot in a phosphorescent light, and then faded, revealing six figures again from the similar light from what I would have seen just the day before. Four of them were familiar - the Trial Masters I had seen before with their trainee siblings, but with one more adult-like one in the front and center, wearing a brown overcoat with reflective platinum cuffs, side pockets, and outer borders. It was loosely fastened by a ring for a belt at the waist, barely concealing the trialmaster uniform that the other two graduate trialmasters were wearing. In the back was an unusual figure I've never seen before, only merely a female wizard with a bright indigo purple ponytail and massive matching eyes. She wore a formal cloak, crimson in color, and had a flamerose wand in her hand with a matching battle-stance, as though she expected a fight.

The adult trial master commanded, having to correct her long and straight brown hair while doing so due to having some of it wedged into her mouth from a possible strong gale she recently had to face, with her stern hazel gaze boring into the fearful eyes of Noot, "We meet again, Noot. Do you have the team name and all of the application forms for the team you led out to the floatling barracks? We wish to review them now."

Noot rushed around to pick up all of the papers and things the lady required, and rambled nervously, "S-Samantha, it-t's so nic-ce to see you again! H-here's what you needed from me. And by the way, the decided team name was the Memers."

This "Samantha" lady seemed to gape a little at the thought of having an entire branch of her workforce being named something as silly as the "Memers." The clearly wasn't pleased, as her perfectly trimmed brows suddenly furrowed and she opened her chapped-lipped mouth to make a cross remark. She growled, "You seriously named the team the Memers? How incompetent of a name is that! It doesn't strike fear into the hearts of any other teams and certainly would make us look like an embarassing abomination of what I'd even call a what-army-this-this. You know hoe much I hate being greeted by my informal name too, Noot! I CANNOT STAND BEING CALLED ANYTHING BUT THE LEADER OF THE TRIAL MASTERS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

Her anguished voice resounded throughout the wooden walls of the treehouse for longer than it usually would like a shout or a single gasp. "Samantha" was clearly red in the face with embarrassment of Noot's choices of words. Even that Captain Aaron kid and the other Trial Masters were crouching slightly in fear. "Samantha" suddenly let go and changed her mood, "I'm...sorry. Just please remember to call me by my formal name and not to embarrass me in front of my entire probable future helpers. I just want to get the point across that I'm pretty ashamed of how our immature academy students are. I - I mean old great Magic Mistress would surely disapprove of the behavior of these young prodigies and would give the thirty of them detention in an instant for even attempting to wish to name a branch of our group a," the Leader of the Trial Masters takes a second to reread one of the voting papers for the team names, "deserters, or quitters, or even memers. No, you are supporters, not anything else. And how could this happen! I'm afraid that all I can say from here on out is that I'll have to call upon another future leader of this shameful not-a-team. So what should it be named...ah, someone at least is sensible out of these people...they requested for the team name to be Team Steam. I guess this will have to do -"

Noot interrupts, "You hear that, children? Sa - I mean, the Leader of the Trial Masters, is the one who decided that our name will be Team Steam from here on out. Remember that."

The furious, hard-stare look that this Leader of the Trial Masters was giving Noot clearly screamed, "In the name of the Astral Warden, please stop it, Noot."

Noot quickly apologized, "Deepest apologies, Leader of the Trial Masters. But I fail to see what I -"

Noot was cut off abruptly by the stressed-anger tone of the Leader of the Trial Masters' grumble, "You interrupted. Now let's get back to what I was explaining so generously to you bratty students. Team Steam would be an at least somewhat sensible name for you. And now that I punish Noot for his inability to do what he must carry out, he will be assigned a team by my words. Noot, you seem to fit the Leading Volunteers team, let's make it official. And students, here's how your team goes. I will not repeat my information because it's a waste of my precious time. You will all obtain a magical guide for your team in a few seconds which automatically changes its information with the updates to the team. I have all of the procedures, rules, and rankings. There will be an assigned leader to your team who'll stay and leave, and they are graduated from my, er, the Academy, and may change with the needs. All of them will be from the Leading Volunteers team, a special team that was already banded together earlier today with every leader that will be allowed to be distributed to each student-filled group. There are two rankings for your team, in which you may be promoted/demoted to and from elites and servants. Guidelines will be provided in the guide. Please review it and after today, you'll be assigned your first leader. Everything counts, and violation of any of these rules will get you tried by the current leader and the rest of the elites, if any. If you are guilty three times, you will be kicked from the team and you'll have to survive by yourself until something cataclysmic happens to you. Students may only have until June 15, 8019 to return to the southern docks on that day as early as the first sight of daylight. A ship will come and return you all to your homes and you'll be provided a way back. Remember this date, students. More information about the conclusion to the student school year will be held in mandatory program-wide meetings. Have any questions, ask you leader that arrives later today. Good day."

The Leader of the Trial Masters brandished a familiar paw-tipped wand and then turned to huddle with the five other teleported wizards from behind her. She alone became once again enveloped in the phosphorescent light and disappeared, leaving only bits of sparkling, clear stardust on the ground from where she stood. The five rest of the people who teleported here were still huddled and talking quickly, as though the purple girl was being interrogated. Noot then announced, "Students, I was told to tell you all to open out your hands in front of you like you're reading a paper. In your hands will appear your Team Steam guide."

Like magic, everyone was suddenly given a scroll-like guide that had everything about our team. I scanned the paper and saw me at the top of my list. Finally, I'm at least not a last person this time! I thought.

<<Apprentice, Flashforward to Present>>

Well, that day, I was assigned a leader that never changed; her name is Equilibrianna. She's definitely not human, but doesn't look like she exists without a commanding body as though she can transfer her soul into other creatures. This creature can speak like us, without any strange dialect or accent, but rather like anyone would from North America's northern parts. She doesn't exactly look human, though - she has oddly pale pink skin, fair, with multicolored braids and spirals of hair that look like to have colors beyond the ones of the rainbow. She can levitate, she's only four feet tall, and has only four fingers and toes per limb. She has a pair spiraled horns, like a gazelles, with a perfect line of scales on each and shine a lustery maroon. She also has somewhat of a devil's tail, with a forked part on the end and also is matching maroon. However, she is luckily clothed with a mahogany burlap hood and cloak, wearing very stripy and pointed purple-and-green shoes that look just to be called "magic boots." I never saw her with a wand, but she rather uses odd powers of sorcery instead, mainly fire, water, and ice spells to match our team. Its pretty odd that she was actually in the Leading Volunteers team too - her power level only matches a tamed Tarragon, not even as close as a wild embershed's.

Our team went on adventures and clearly encountered a lot of teams that eventually became rivals and enemies. The only teams we envied on our level were Team Mud, Ice, Lava, Smoke, Dust, and Vapor. Team Frost was are biggest foe, though...

<<Flashback to Team Frost Encounter, Sept. 30, 8018>>

It was only the time I was able to have Aquafina, my Dragling, and Auri-Chan as Creela the Creela. I already had all that I do so far, besides my Shivertusk, Pronghorn. This was actually the day I caught him! Equilibrianna woke us all up the day earlier in Lamplight Town, attempting to make us travel to Bonfire Spire and evolve some of our already-obtained water pets to catch and evolve for in case we meet any strange teams nearby for the next day's possible encounters. It seemed as though Equilibrianna has powers to psychically predict our team's happenings. She was very right.

The day we went to Bonfire Spire, we were given a day's mission to collect food supplies, mountain gear, and more as well as leveling, rescuing, and evolving more monsters. That day, Creela evolved with the first battle against a Flameger who was the sire of two peach-coated Tinyger twin sons. They were actually a bounty, but it turned out that they were already claimed by another wizard, so they actually managed to get the profits from my win. Luckily, my Creela became a Celesteate right before my eyes, and she was a keeper - her beautiful mantis-like form and her stunningly bright features make her dazzling even to look at in battle, so I had to resort to begging for someone to give me some shades so I could battle without becoming legally unable to see in the Volcano Village. A generous and stunning pale female wizard was slipping down the steps to the Volcanic Entrance with a pair of birdlike creatures in tow. Alas, it was merely Katrina Summerwind with her Snoots and Smoldash alongside her. She was up there just to freshen up after a battle against a trio of wild Liosen, who had "made her hair so windblown and messy" that she decided to re-dye it into a light cyan ponytail from blonde braids with black highlights and change her contacts from coffee brown to olive hazel. She changed out of her usual bee-related equipment and into a more icy-colored frozen crown, a purplish glacial ward, the frozen shard wand, and odd icy-colored sandals with a bootlike backing. She sighed and rolled her eyes, "Apprentice, what's stupid that you need helping with now?"

"My new Celesteate's a little bit too bright for me to directly look at. I need some kind of pair of shades to help me out." I answered.

Katrina started speaking with a monotonously angry voice as always, but ended in a cheesy-positive mood, "You have five options. One, release your dumb Celesteate and catch a better water pet. Two, quit the team and go on your own to Lamplight Town, work your entire life income of gold off to get the level-10 Tek-Y4 and obtain the tinted headphones. Three, beg here until the end of the day like a spoiled brat and possibly get someone to give you their monthly member box, and you just might get those funky rock star shades they advertised. Four, maybe just deal with it how anyone else would. Five, I'm telling Equilibrianna that you're eligible to become an elite...but only if you stop moping around. You look as pathetic as my bae fighting an Embershed with only his Battaram left."

"You mean Codyen?"

"OF COURSE I MEAN MY BF, YOU DUNCE! And, it doesn't sound like you'll be allowing me to help you out because of your issues. Do it yourself...you might as well stay as a servant."

I was once again just left red in the face when she said that. I hope you trip on those sandals and die in the lava, fool. I bitterly thought. Yet she wouldn't hear it from the old moping me. The quirkiest of all the servants. The one and only Apprentice.

I actually ended up evolving my pets up to Auri-chan as an Aureate and Aquafina into a Tarragon, and doing everything I needed to get to do and I even got into becoming an elite. Everyone else, both the elites and the servants, were very displeased. At the time, only Katrina, Codyen, Jenna, and Smoky were the elites. Carlossaurus (just Carlos), and Willow were servants. They were the only actually pretty nice servants that there were...all of the elites were either popular and mean (Katrina) and the rest were nice people but preferred to be alone and shy, usually mean if you approach them if they don't know you all that much (the rest). The other servants, the ones in trios, were usually the trashy ones (Harley, Halsey, and Hailey Thunderer, Pitt, Jonathan, and Thompson were the loser orcish dragic fans, John, Thomas, and Jimmy fire lovers, the annoying people from the arena, and the nice female servants that seem just the same in behavior as the shy/wishy-washy elites. I was able to get the Tek-Y4 headphones and jumpsuit by myself after a long, sweaty hour back at Lamplight Town. I was able to return only to find my crew packing up to head back to Lamplight Town due to exhaustion and to jeer at me becoming an elite.

That night I was surrounded only by my pets and Equilibrianna, who was helping me with my vows and renouncing the work of the Order so I would graduate into an elite. The team then slept over in a motel near the Lamplight Outskirts, where all we did was enter the vast suite and become tranced into a slumber while Equilibrianna had to salvage a few thousand gold and pay the owner (a dwarf) for our stay. She was unable to haggle the price due to the rigidness of the dwarf, even being racist towards the tiefling that Equlibrianna is...the tiefling race are often shunned for their looks and powers.

We woke up and I was once again late - everyone was already lined before Equilibrianna at the door while she belted out our orders like a sensible team leader. We now were prepared for our trip to Shiverchill Mountains and we were given the orders to each search around the area and collect "frozen somethings" that we would smite and smelt open near the Furnace Room and collect the treasures inside. We were ordered to work in small groups, so fives it was. The Thunderers were together, the annoying dragic fanatics were together, the fire lovers were together, Smoky, Willow, Talia, Gogo, Magnes and I had to form our own team, and the others all formed their own.

It was actually pretty great - I got to hang with some of the crushes I had before and started to form. Throughout the day, we all teamed up to battle against the different foes we had to face - Rascal and Ice Neek being the most common, Arcticlaw, Squally, and Battaram being less common, with a few rare ivory monsters also seeming to be attracted to us.

Smoky was skilled, definitely, and seemed to take the lead on everything. Slashing Volcannon left and right on all of our foes and letting her Flyger and Solarasis doing the final blows on most were stunning; rays of gales, flamethrowers, and whirlwinds easily scooped up all of the lighter enemies and the last attacks were usually made by Smoky's "torchblade," something she had when she was a child that resembled a flaming broadword. Others were followed by clawing and talons from her Flyger's and Solarasis' attack turns.

Willow seemed to take out most of the rarer and stronger monsters with plant and water spells that somehow made the wincing foes take almost super-effective damage. Her "sisters," as she called them, Sabrina and Sphagnum, seemed to also do the same thing and pummel the foes with small, light attacks as though they were trying not to hurt the monsters.

Gogo was the speediest of the bunch, though. Pikktrio, her Tribeak, was also pretty fast and the three even dealt physical damage to the foes with lightning-fast, coordinated wing attacks. Somehow, the Tribeak always seems to dodge ice spells on the ground. Gogo just pummeled on her spells though, too.

Talia was still a bit out-of-monsters, though. She never got her Thyme yet, a Dreamlet. she almost always refrained from doing any effort and only occasionally spent energy on a Star Cluster or Light Wave that usually missed the foes by a mile. She really needed assistance.

Magnes was here too, don't worry. She only had her Highfawn, not even name yet, which eventually evolved into Prince Extravagance, her Gloricious. She was only here for support on food and other things to aid in our performance.

Everything went fine as we took a path straight to the Throne Room, where we decided to peer inside and see if we could find anything useful in there. All of a sudden, however - we were all inside until a large, gilded door slammed behind us. That exact moment was when we realized that some people working against us were here. Smoky was the first to bellow. She roared, "Who's here?"

Two soft feet landed from a fall right in front of us. We were unable to see anything now that our vision was blinded. The owner of those feet sneered coyly, "Only the leader and their pack of Team Frosts. That's our team to you - hot-bloodeds."

Team Frost? I never heard of that team before I starting hearing word on the street a few days before about the most high-ranking of all of the elemental teams there were - they had students among them. I recognized the British accent in the voice of this feminine being - but the name of her was at the tip of my tongue. She even made an eerie, echoing chuckle throughout the hall. The she-voice continued, "Don't you understand who we are? And more importantly, who I am?"

An unsheathing sound of a blade resounded throughout the hall. All of a sudden, a tangerine light emanated throughout the hall, yet all I could see was the ghostly figure of a levitating hooded girl I saw before - Mira, who was standing right in front of Smoky as she, shaken, was trembling with her flaming sword in hand.

Smoky fearfully took a step back and replied with a quivering voice, "I-I know who y...you are, Mira. W-why would someone as p-p-powerful as you at-ttempt in leading a pack of Team Frosts?"

Mira made another maniacal laugh that sent shivers down my spine. What more that even made my skin crawl was an enclosing circle of taller, bulkier wizard around us all wearing a matching uniform of ski goggles, beanies, and icy-plated armor. They all had imperfected Crystal Staffs in their hands of both variants, prodding us and poking us closer into a tight circle. We were captured.

Mira answers, "I'm not just a member of the Champion Union, but I also have a cult of followers that lead me to joining the Leading Volunteers too as well as setting me up to become their leader. You see, Team Steam peons, this is the rise of Miraclulism - my followers plan on training here in the harshest of all areas to become the most powerful and sly wizard graduates there are. And you just got into our main training area. Therefore, you have to pay! Members of Team Frost, Falling Star Smash!"

We all stand our ground and prepare to get pummeled, but then...nothing happens. There were no saviors to aid in our help. The first attack on us was over without giving us enough time to use our spells back. They must have some type of speed-casting equipment, or now would a member of Team Frost be able to cast spells fast enough? I felt an electric, a nuclear, an explosive charge through my veins as I was heavily hit by the overpowered spell. I was an elite - I had to stand though it.All of us had all of our monsters out, so while everyone else was slugging off their spell damage on the Team Steam side, they were ordering for a variety of spells to be executed. I especially bellowed, "Aquafina, Auri-chan, it's a free for all! Fight smart!"

They all cast very hard spells that sent most of the Team Frost members into shock. I was able to land a Light Wave on one of the members while another from behind was planning on using another Falling Star Smash on me, so I flung my odd fusion wand at them like a javelin, and cracked their ski goggles enough to land straight through their face. It must have hurt like death. Just how I was going to feel myself!

Mira called out, now high above everyone in her ultimate form of levitation, "Now, Frosts! Fling out your flasks and use Super Nova!"

On command, each of the conscious members of Team Frost revealed a strange, large capsule of bright blue liquid that seemed to be very viscous in their bottles. Marked on one of the sides was a snowflake image - and I knew exactly what they were - each of them were equipped with a slew of potions due to alchemy, and they know some secrets about us, due to especially taking out Rare Ice Resist potions. They all flung up each of theirs into the cold air above us, and then light appeared from each of their Crystal Staffs, collecting in a large sphere of a similar bright blue plasma right above us, like an ice-powered Super Nova. That was exactly it - they probably were able to study alchemy enough to know secrets that applying potions to spells adds special powers!

The light fell upon us all and we all fell unconscious. Team Steam is no match for Team Frost.

We all have then woke up somewhere in the Lost Island in our cots in the barracks back in the soldier's quarters of the Floatlings. I was once again the last person to rise, now in a light brown cloak marked with swirls - I was in the cloak of healing, something that most wizards wear when unconscious to help themselves heal, applied by another person near them who has one. Weird - it felt somewhat overpowering and dreamy, as though I was intoxicated by something. I decided to look around - I still had my equipment and everything I left before the missions, with Auri-chan, Aquafina, and Pronghorn around me. They seemed to call out in their own different languages, as though they couldn't understand each other verbally yet understood the same happening - we all were faint slightly due to our ambush. I got out from the cot and reached into a wooden chest nearby, with the top item being my fusion wand, dinged-up and damaged by its javelin throw I used it for. I turned around and noticed that my three pets still had sorrowful eyes all staring at me, as though they needed some support. I spoke solemnly, "We had a great run, friends. However, I have to let you three rest again. You probably were just given a healing ritual, so you weren't summoned back into my wand. I guess it's time."

I raised my wand and orange light emanated around all three of my pets, and they materialized into small light and dust particles, summoned back into my wand like a steady stream of the sun's rays. I had to find the others of my team as my next priority, so I peered around the still somewhat dark, early-morning room to see two brown-cloaked wizards sitting on a cot together, some trios talking quietly to each other, and a group of other wizards circled around two still lying on their cots. This was something worthy of checking out!

I shuffled as not to wake any still sleeping teammates, and lined up behind Willow and Talia only to see Katrina and Codyen lying on their cots, just waking up in their brown cloaks too. It seems as though everyone was eventually defeated by Team Frost - everyone had scuff-marks and bandages still clinging to their face, although I touched my own face only to see that I had been burned slightly from the burns of the ice-plasma. I winced and let out a gasp, and only Willow turned around to ask, "You okay, Appren- "

Willow looked in shock to see my face, I assumed was hideous due to her facial expression. She seemed only to have a slight bruise on her forehead, turned a darker blue than usual. She continues, "Oh my gosh - Apprentice, what happened to you? How did you get these burns? We were together and experienced the same thing, but how did you get ice-burns and not me?"

I opened my mouth without a response. I just told her, "I don't know, Willow. I wish you good health, however. And what's happening with Katrina and Codyen?"

"They were defeated by Mira in the Hidden Room as they were goofing off!" lashed a furious Equilibrianna, who now appeared close to the ladder to the "downstairs" main hall.

Everyone in the room who was part of Team Steam shot up and gave Equililbrianna the Team Steam salute - meshed hands extended like a stretch towards her. "At ease, Team Steam. I have bad news to break to all of you." Everyone started to mumble, but Equilibrianna raised a maroon hand in silence. "Due to these terrible circumstances, we have had to speak to some Trial Masters about this ambush. Their response was to shape up or ship out - if we want to stay as a team, we need tighter restrictions and to train. We were given the option to train you, but when November comes, it commences. I would no longer be your leader due to demotions and I will be kicked from the Leading Volunteers team."

I raised a hand, and Equilibrianna nods, allowing me to speak. "Will you come back? We'll miss you!"

She replies, "Sadly, no. Since I have been kicked, I would have to find another job. For now, I will stay as your leader until the end of Pumpkinfest, right around the corner - just a month and ten days left. I was kicked for failure in protecting you from harm, and it was so severe that I got you all heavily injured. I'm very ashamed...but, in honor of the Trial Masters and their wishes for a productive future, I must step down and keep my head low around them. So will all of you until the new leader comes. Understand?"

We all nod. What she meant was heartbreaking - it was uncommon for team leaders to change from what I've heard, and the new leader could possibly be worse. For now, I would have to have my entire team suffer the consequences of our defeat. If we couldn't rival Team Frost's intelligence, we couldn't rival the menial work we would need to have for the Trial Masters to be successful in saving the islands. This could also mean that they wouldn't fund for us to return home, they wouldn't help us any longer, we would be less respected in the eyes of the only authority figures there are. This gave me chills - not seeing my family again, not able to do anything...why did this have to happen not even before the end of the first out of ten months I'd stay?

<<Apprentice, Flashforward to Present>>

Oh, yeah, the worst foes there are. And now, October has come, and so has Pumpkinfest. And this is still the life I live in now, never changing, never improving...

Well, I had to leave all of a sudden for the mission today. Luckily, everything was successful and now that it's midnight, I can do what I want to do as we have free time for the entire night until the morning comes - so I want to travel back to the Lost Island and deliver a few crates of remaining things I can find at the Southern Docks to Swoopy for any possible reward, and I hope I could just ride on Aquafina, now a Tarragon, through the empty seas and return to the hotel back where my team is staying at in Lamplight Town. Therefore, now at the Coliseum, I just decided to take off alone into the town and see what I can see before picking up any crates of goods for Swoopy.

The outside area of the Coliseum was lit up with melted candles and Pumpkinfest decorations everywhere, seeming kind of like the Carnival in ancient times with everyone dressed in elaborate clothing and masks. However, I didn't seem to be in the mood for that today. Everyone now in their dressy robes and standard outfits, they seemed to want to just hang out with all the other teamless students and islander graduates. I decided to keep to myself, now wearing just some Sea Sword clothing and my odd fusion wand, somehow glinting and shiny through the battles it has fiercely lost, too many times.

I traveled to a less populated area out of sheer just wanting to be alone. I decided to look for anything I could find, like items or equipment, in the discolored leaves of the hedges of the Lamplight Outskirts and Northwest Court. However, I felt myself so lost in this emptiness that I forgot all about everything else - that's when I turned around to see a dark figure, hunched, near the far hedges. It was hard to make out what it was due to this area being the only dark place in the town and that I had a lack of information, still, upon all of the monsters on the island here. All I could see was fear stricken in its two, amber eyes as though it was trying to be furtive about traveling around. I then turned around and payed it no more heed as that was a possible way to make it feel safer and go away from me. I turned around a moment later to find it gone.

I decided to keep to the more populated parts of the town for safety, so I traveled to the Vendor's Plaza to find nobody there. I traveled to the Pet Park and found just a few quiet wizards walking their buddies around a fish fountain. Still bored, I strolled all the way to the Southern Docks and only to see one person here - Sir Vey, struggling to keep awake. trying not to make a sound, I bottled my urge to fail being silent as I gently took up two heavy crates, another stray crate of evolotus eggs I just noticed haven't been traded in and a crate full of roasted chicken. making a slight noise on thumping the egg crate, Sir Vey's head jolted around. He gasped, "You! These crates are for Team Steam to handle! You can't just go stealing them!"

He charged forward and I brandished my wand just in time to catch him off guard. I replied, "Sir, I am part of Team Steam, off for the late hours. I'm just returning them to Swoopy."

"Really? I must inquire if you have a team badge on you."

I froze. My team never gotten badges for their members. I answered to the best of my ability, "Team Steam doesn't have a badge, Sir. I have to get these final shipments in for the Lost Island."

"According to my schedule, I was ordered to keep guard for your team until midnight. It appears that you are tardy if you in fact are a member of Team Steam, and this results in punishment. What is your name, young wizard?"

Any way I could end the situation, I would be looked for. Punishments on Team Steam could be the stripping of the elite title, expulsion from the program, or even put in the bounty prison along with all the other bounty-hunted monsters. Running could be just as bad. defeating Sir Vey, however, could knock him unconscious and there'd be no evidence to prove me wrong as I don't give any information. I summoned a Prism Blast, and Sir Vey was knocked down and fell faint with a thump clattering with his heavy armor.

I summoned Aquafina from my wand just in time - a bunch of wizards poured into the area spontaneously as soon as Aquafina materialized. I commanded her, "Mounting position, now! There's no time to explain, Aquafina!"

She did as I commanded her, and I climbed onto her back, flattening her mane of spikes to the right side so I could sit without pain. "Quickly now, fly as far away as you can!"

A strong gale of wind cursed through me as we rose high into the air, just above the foggy clouds. there was a perfect view of the town from here; I could see a whole gang of wizard around the KO-ed body of Sir Vey. It was hard to look, however; the beats of the large wyvern wings of Aquafina made my body hop up and down, on the verge of falling off of her and into the ocean. I cooed to her, "Aquafina, thank you for your cooperation this far. We're in trouble now, so we better fly over to the Lost Island with the -"

I peered around. I didn't bring the crates! Oh well, all I could do now was to warn Equilibrianna and the others in the hotel of someone knocking out Sir Vey. "Aquafina, I think we should go back to Lamplight Town and to the hotel."

Following my command, she swooped down overhead of the Town Square and made me lurch around, feeling very queasy. She then slowly carried me off to the History District, which hosted the hotel our team was staying at for the night. Right outside was Equilibrianna in her specter equipment and magic boots, talking warningly to a duo of tall, seemingly familiar wizards in Luminite-themed costumes and masks, gripping a black, reinforced briefcase each. Aquafina and I stood to the far side near a group of crouched wizards watching a wild Soral and a wild Peeko brawling over a large scale. Over the sounds of static and thunder from the Soral and rustling leaves and vines from the Peeko, it was difficult to make out what the three were talking about.

I could hear Equilibrianna warning the two somewhat loudly, "So did you to hear about what happened to Sir Vey? I'm catching glimpses of others already talking about it! i think that's something we should check out. Whoever it was who injured him better be excommunicated for it at how bad they committed that crime."

Yeesh! I would be excommunicated? What does this mean - I think it's religious. Is believing in the good of the wizards a religion?

One of the costumed wizards spoke seriously back, "Yes. The Church of Astrallum would probably have them in for a pummeling if they ever get their hands on this culprit. The Cult of the Order of Influence would take no responsibility. The ability of defeating a folk hero is hard and dangerous, so let's give them something hard and dangerous too!"

The other costumed wizard growled, "Aaron, hold your tongue. We have to find out the basics of what happened first. We might need you to help us, Equilibiranna. Us undercover Trial Master agents might need to scan the area and see who did this terrible crime, for what cause, and how they're going to strike back next."

The costumed Aaron answered, "Yes, MOM! You don't have to be this much of an obvious basket-case over what happened to us and taking it out on me!"

Equilibrianna intervened, "Hey, hey...it's not Trial-Master-like to behave like that. I am completely willing to help on both cases."

The costumed other replied, "Well, I don't want any help about our issues, but thanks for offering. How about we do what you said and put the past behind us - we still have to complete our roles and do what we must for the greater good of Prodigy Island, starting with this."

Equilibrianna finished, "Let us commence our investigation, then. Aaron, Aria, follow, please."

The costumed Aria added, "Shhh...we do not want to keep our names public like this. We must leave no trace. The Cult could be watching, and any harsh words could lead to my...our...disqualification in the Cult-held Cooking Competition."

They then disappeared around a corner of the street, and I was left having to sleep outside for the rest of the night, hoping not to be caught. I yawned, and Aquafina puffed a breath of warm air onto my hair. I gestured for her to be my blanket for tonight, as I had no way of getting to the barracks or the dorm now that both of us were tired...tired besides my mind racing about my terrible crime I accidentally committed. We were able to find a nice spot near the bordering hedges for our rest, and I drifted off to sleep...

<<Nike's POV>>

I had my javelin ready as the murky water suddenly burst up to find myself confronted with two Funkeel and one large Fathom, who wore a strange pendant of golden string and a purple cross with a keyhole in the center of the emblem. I barked, "Who are you, two Funkeel and one Fathom?"

The Fathom spoke, "I am the almighty Vines, the vineyard owner and keeper of Cypress Grove. Who might you be?"

I didn't know if I could trust this spontaneous Fathom thing or not. I questioned back, "I don't know if I can trust your or not with this situation. I don't even know what Cypress Grove is in all my life on these islands."

"Don 't bother. I have to ask you a more important favor, though. There's been a large gargoyle monster who recently stole a key to my farm, and I can't enter it through the swimming path. If you can get me the key, I can get you a lifetime supply of grapes. It's a deal if I get to know your name."

I wavelike rush of memory blasted through me. Avane was a gargoyle bounty creature, and wants some grapes. she might have the key but wants another monster to do the chores for her to get her into the cooking competition!
