Motivations of the Puppet Master is a fanon theory about Prodigy Math first developed by FourSevensRueful. It discusses all of the possible reasons why the Puppet Master became the way he is and why he continues to promote terrorism and the supremacy of Shadow magic.

Dictionary[]

  • BBEG—a role-playing game (RPG) acronym for "Big Bad Evil Guy," which usually applies to the greatest villains in a series or campaign.
  • BBEP—an acronym meaning "Big Bad Evil Place," which is the location where a primary antagonist lives, makes their lair, or makes their headquarters.

Background Information[]

From what is currently canon in Prodigy Math, the Puppet Master is a large, levitating, shadow-like entity with glowing yellow eyes and a mulberry purple cloak to obscure some of his body parts. He has two floating marionette handles with strings hanging from them as fingers. He uses one of his "hands" to hold his long, gnarled staff tipped in a magenta-and-purple igneous crystal.

While physically imposing and most closely resembling the Grim Reaper, he is a generally unwise person who teams with Pippet, a sentient puppet with an equal absence of foresight. They forget to keep quiet about their plans in the presence of enemies and they have very predictable, clichéd methods of committing crime.

So far, the Order of Influence, a group of nefarious wizards of which the Puppet Master is a member, has made great progress in exerting its dominance over Prodigy Island and Harmony Island. He, his minions, and his predecessors used mind control on a vast amount of monsters to do their bidding, created various lifeforms for abusive purposes, cast the Original Epics into stone, and poo-pooed on general academia and the practice of Astral magic. He is indeed the BBEG of Prodigy Math, but he is just one responsible party out of all of the Order of Influence.

His origin story and motivations for committing so many crimes or acts most people consider immoral are unknown. This theory attempts to explain or give possible reasons why.

Likely Origins and Motivations[]

Unlikely and Impossible Origins[]

There are many commonplace theories for the origin story of the Puppet Master that cannot or are likely not possible within the Prodigy Math canon. The following subsections exist to inform fans about what is likely improbable to be the case.

Gale is the Puppet Master[]

Gale, the very small and relatively meek fairy, is deeply aligned with the Astral element and fights each day to protect the Academy, within reason. He is quite powerless in the situation that he exists in, but at least he had the constitution to appear at ground zero to effectively spit in the Puppet Master's face. The two have polar opposite ideals and very different physical appearances and general size, so it is highly unlikely that Gale could ever be a second identity for Prodigy Math's BBEG.

Gale, on the other hand, is generally knowledgeable enough to repair keystone pedestals, manipulate them if misplaced within the Academy, and has the same Shadow detection abilities as the Wardens and Noot. However, he has a temperament and personality too unlike the Puppet Master for the latter to be able to mimic.

Noot is the Puppet Master[]

Oh come on, you have to be kidding! The mere idea that this fairy, who is even smaller in stature than Gale and has even less profound knowledge of magic, could ever be the Puppet Master is quite unintelligent. Noot is a black-and-blue-eyed, buggy little creature with the most annoying boyish personality that could not possibly be a guise! While it is possible that the Puppet Master can be of Noot's size and shape or even shift his appearance, this is not one of our BBEG's known abilities.

Additionally, Noot appears at the same place and time as the Puppet Master, meaning that a general transformation of appearance, powers, and non-self-replacement time travel are all necessary if the Puppet Master is to be the same person as Noot.
