“ | Plato is NOT my friend; Aristotle is NOT my friend--my friend is Harmony. | ” |
— Newton
|
Newton is an NPC and the antihero protagonist of Eques Astra.
Appearance[]
He looks like he walked straight out of the early 18th century into the 91st. Because he is small and gets cold frequently, he wears a warm frock coat accompanied with a warm polyester stock (for some reason, he found plastic fabrics on Prodigy Island and decided that it was better for keeping warm than wool). Most often, he handles glass objects and delicate books, so he wears silk curators' gloves for their protection. The unfortunate nature of his fashion sense and the cold climate of the upper levels of the Academy caused him to adapt by wearing fluffy, periwinkle leg warmers over his knee-high socks and upgrading from the shoes made in his time to striped, white-on-lavender fútbol cleats.
He does not look as young as most wizards, mainly due to his greater age and decades of laboratory work. The glitches he experienced upon being transferred from the real world to Prodigy Island caused him to regrow a lot of his hair and some height (still shorter than some Academy students nearing graduation), allows him to become a translucent spectre with horns and a tail, and lets him haunt people.
Personality[]
Newton has layers--he cares not for strangers or enemies of his. If forced to be acquainted with someone, he will try his best to be respectable to a degree, but not for anyone's gain but his own. His apathy for minor problems on the island like the unfair treatment of monsters and dwarves in comparison to wizards and pets capable of verbal communication may make him seem like an absolute jerk, but the island inhabitants of his time cast him out for being too human and too different. His human relatives in the real world were unforgiving and did not value his needs. He criticized his critics both there and in Prodigy Island, causing great fights between him and the other Wardens that founded Lamplight Academy.
He shared a lot of problems that his friends Tesla and Halley had with real-world people skeptical to accept their claims about the behavior of the natural world; being pitted against other bright-minded humans to found an Academy in an entirely different universe was even more of a challenge to his ego. However, he realized that he and his co-founders were powerless without magic and required The Ancient's help. Once Newton provided them with knowledge, they provided him and his team with uncut stones that produced great yet balanced magical energy. Taking this as a sign of trust, Newton no longer held prejudice against the monsters of the island and soon learned that he had a deity (the Ancient) on his side.
Backstory[]
The following spoils the first few chapters of Eques Astra. Read at your own risk.
Born in the real world to Hannah Newton (Isaac Newton I, his father, died before he was born), a member of a non-noble agricultural family, he was raised impoverished. Only until he begrudgingly received funds to attend something beyond grammar school did his abilities relating to mathematics expand enough for him to make a name for himself. He studied both Christian texts and scientific ones, making and drawing conclusions on his own. While more devoted to the god of his interpretation, he did make time for his competitive publishings and infighting with other European polymaths. This is up to the extent where he matches the story of the actual Isaac Newton.
He was, one day, visited by Rueful, an intertemporal "traveler," a mischievious fangirl who sought after him for her selfish romantic desires. They became good buddies and remained that way for decades; she brought him to see other universes in exchange for his affection; there was but one time that she brought him to live in the Prodigy universe.
Weapons/Gear[]
Newton wears comfortable clothes that provide little to no health or damage buffs. He may cast powerful spells and nonmagical moves from his hands, not needing to take magic from a relic or wand to cast non-Astral spells. In battle, he is almost always of Astral nature. If/when he requires a crystal to fend off a Shadow construct, he will use a Glass Pyramid to increase the efficacy of his spells.
Free Equipment[]
In the FourSevensRueful version of the game, the Astral Warden's quarters contain a trophy case; one of Newton's pastel purple overcoats is on display, but cannot be taken. One of Newton's Glass Pyramids is held up on a stainless, damascus steel staff and can be taken from the case upon beating the game (the new Astral Warden permits it, so it isn't considered stealing). Any equipment items that did not get redistributed were not transferred to Prodigy.
Unorthodox Weapons[]
In addition, he still stores chemicals, potion mixtures, and chemical waste in other storage locations similarly to The Smuggler. Most of them, in the game, are not present anywhere and have probably been hidden away in an inaccessible place. Due to their known potency, they were most likely eradicated or disposed of before the player was canonically born.
His use of technical spells in battle has been noted to be "frequent" and they are often used in sequence. although these sequences have not been recorded, he almost never uses combat spells first in battle against people that he is most afraid of being defeated by.

Abilities[]
- Evil Eye: As an Infernal Wizard, conscious eye contact with any wizard or human will cause intense discomfort to whoever stares back at Newton. This does not work if Newton stares unconsciously, is faint, is asleep, or is dead. It fails if used against entities immune to innate magic of other beings or if used on Spouse.
- Cupid's Venom: Being bitten by Newton may cause venom transfer into the bloodstreams of his victim(s). It often causes full-body paralysis except for the eyes. Entities without fleshy bodies cannot be bitten. Newton never uses this ability without the consent of the victim. The venom, in high concentrations, is addictive.
- Sorcery: Newton can receive a substantial damage bonus, critical chance increase, and critical damage increase if he uses his hands to cast spells. This effect is hampered if he wears gloves.
- Spontaneous Divination: Although this is usually reversed to as "the opposite of amnesia," it causes Newton and others with this ability to obtain information through psychic practices. It cannot be used consciously, but divination occurs more frequently when exposed to psychological stress.
- Utility Magic: Like most wizards and magical creatures, Newton can channel magic to illuminate surroundings, breathe underwater, make oneself temporarily invisible, use telekinesis to move objects, teleport within a small radius, and change into a different image for a short period of time.
Trivia[]
- Is believed to be the most attractive of all Wardens to ever exist.
- Fanon Newton likes to swim in his free time (if any).
