I (Forbidden Lloyd) wondered if there were magicless inhabitants on the island featured in Prodigy Math, so I figured, why not write something about it?
Enjoy!
Ever wondered what happened to the residents of this island before us, thousands of years ago? Well, I, for one, am quite curious, and have collected quite a few ancient documents regarding the origins of the wizards. To start, I have one letter and one journal entry from Professor Cole Steel.
Professor Cole Steel,
What has just happened is incredible! A foreigner has not only just appeared on this island, but they possess supernatural abilities! Not only does this mean that there are others out there other than us, but they may possess these abilities too!
~ Prof. Thomas Wilson
JOURNAL ENTRY 309
More of these strangers, or “wizards”, as they call themselves, came ashore the other day, possessing the same abilities as the first! They claim to have come from the floating island off to the northeastern coast that they named Harmony Island, the island that has been lowering itself for the past couple decades. As for their magic, they call it “Astral Magic”. Professor Steel and I would like to study them in regards to their abilities. Can our residents possess this magic? Can they be enhanced or restricted? Are there more types of this magic?
Signing off,
~ Prof. Thomas Wilson
Upon further digging, I found the remains of an article, evidently torn out of a newspaper.
WIZARDS ARRIVE ON ISLAND
Yesterday, these wizards arrived at the humble island of Prodigia, taking a dangerous journey down the cascading waterfalls originating from the floating island above the northeastern coast. They named it Harmony Island. With them came their incredible ability to harness a special power the citizens of Prodigia have never seen before. The wizards named this power “Astr…
I guess it was supposed to say “Astral Magic” but the rest of the article is missing. What else did it have written? I suppose we’ll never know. I also found another journal entry, this one from Professor Steel.
Journal Entry, Date 1/11
These visitors are quite intriguing, and their foods have quite unnatural properties. They appear to be able to cure injuries to a certain degree, depending on the food. A few of these wizards have volunteered to be a part of my studies, and I hope to have conclusive results soon.
I also found a torn Wizard Watch with three messages on it. Clearly, the wizards' purpose in arriving was more…malicious.
Silas Battlevault - At home
“Have you arrived at the new island yet? Is it available for colonization?”
You - ???
“I’ve arrived, but there are already inhabitants. What do you suppose we do?”
Silas Battlevault - At home
“Wait. Learn something from them. Gain their trust. Then, we will begin.”
Anyway, Professor Wilson and Professor Steel had been working on something quite special, recorded in the next few journal entries.
Journal Entry, Date 1/18
We have done it! Professor Wilson and I were able to isolate a strand of this “Astral Magic”! And it appeared that there is more to it. We have managed to separate blue, green, red, cyan, and gray strands from the yellow Astral strand. The blue one appears to condensate the air around it and always feels damp. The red one produces considerable amounts of heat, and the cyan one cools the air around it to frigid temperatures. The gray one causes static in the air around it, and the green one causes small flowers to bloom around it, whether there was a normal method of plant reproduction or not. We agreed to call the cyan strand “Ice Magic”, the blue “Water Magic”, the red “Fire”, and the gray “Storm”. As for the green strand, Professor Wilson and I were torn between “Plant” and “Earth”. However, when we tried to put pieces of them back together we weren’t greeted with the yellow glow of the Astral Magic. Instead, we got a purple and black strand. We named it “Shadow Magic”. But something was not right about this particular strand, both Professor Wilson and I agreed on that. So we tried to separate the strands, but it was like the new strand had consumed the previous strands and wouldn’t give them up. So we locked it away, never to see the light of day again.
Journal Entry, Date 1/25
Professor Wilson and I have been studying for a way to construct devices that can harness these magic elements, and so far, we have constructed rings that contain one element in them. Our wizard volunteers have donned these rings and have demonstrated the ability to control these elements when worn. In addition to this, we have created our first magical weapon, a stick with some mushrooms growing off of it, a strand of earth magic in it. Our volunteers dubbed it the “Fungoid”.
Of course, there were a few complaints from the inhabitants. The wizards had started setting up marketing stands and were selling their magical food items, drawing more customers to their stands than others. Eventually, some of the former inhabitants went bankrupt. The perspective of two victims can be seen below.
Dear John,
Brother, I kindly request that I and my family may sleep at your place today. The wizards set up their stands and ever since, those of us selling our goods have been losing customers and money. Today, I was informed that we are being evicted, for we do not have enough money to pay off our home.
Solemnly,
Joel
COMPLAINT LETTER
These “wizards” are drawing away all of our customers for their magic healing food, and we are losing money! In fact, some of us are even losing our houses! We lived here first, and we should not have to sacrifice our lives for some foreigners that can make sparkles from their hands. I trust that you will right this injustice.
In fact, it was requested that the wizards increase their marketing prices to give the residents a chance to sell their goods. They, in fact, increased their prices, but that didn’t fix anything. So it was asked of them to restrict the amount of goods they sell per day. The wizards, however, did not take kindly to this.
COMPLAINT LETTER
These restrictions are unjust, for your citizens are free to sell as much as they want each day, and at much lower prices than us. This bias will not be tolerated for much longer. Don’t forget that there are more of us out there, and we can overpower you.
That very letter increased tensions between the two sides. Threats were traded, and eventually ships full of wizards arrived on the island.
…sk of you and your newcomer wizard friends to leave this island. You are no longer welco…
Once again, this letter suffered the wear of time, but the message is clear. The wizards are being told to leave the island, for they are not welcome by the inhabitants anymore. And with that, both sides were preparing for battle.
Dear Jane,
We both know that the conflict between us and the wizards has been escalating, but I did not think it would escalate this much this fast. We are being drafted for war. It may be a while before I can see you again, my love. Take care of the children while I’m gone.
~ David Williams
JOURNAL ENTRY 321
The wizards have turned on us. All that research, for nothing!
~ Prof. Thomas Wilson
Journal Entry 1/31
The wizards have captured Professor Wilson and I. We’re being forced to create weapons for the wizards. To the army of Prodigia, I’m sorry.
02/15
Jane Wiliams,
Your husband is a true hero to this island. No act can surpass that of giving one’s life to protect their homeland and everyone in it. Your husband deserves the total respect of the island, and his death will not be in vain. Please accept our condolences.
~General Morrow
You - ???
“Commander, the old men’s contraptions really work! Not only have they created rings to harness the five elements, but they have also created wands that not only cast spells of the element it harnesses, but also increases the amount of damage the wielder’s magic does! They could be valuable to us after we complete colonization.”
Isaac Magicmaster - ???
“Very well. We will see what we can do with them after the war.”
02/23
To the Wizard Army Commander,
We, the Army of Prodigia, have acknowledged the state of the war. We cannot risk the lives of our troops any longer. Your forces outnumber ours, 20 men to one. We see only one possibility to end this war in its current state. Please accept this proposal to discuss the terms of surrender, for we are not willing to trade any more lives for lost freedom.
Commander Michaels
Journal Entry 2/24
They found it. The forbidden element. And it’s gotten stronger. Much, much stronger. It’s no longer just a strand of purple and black magic. It’s begun to take the appearance of a small, shadowy human.
You - ???
“Commander, we have found the most powerful source of magic. It grows in the darkness and is unlike any other magic we have ever seen!”
Isaac Magicmaster - ???
“Tear down everything on this island. Leave no survivors.”
Journal Entry 2/24
They’re planning to kill everyone. The Prodigians already surrendered, and these monsters are still planning to kill them. But it doesn’t change the fact that Wilson and I helped them discover more powerful ways to use their magic. Everyone is going to die and this is our fault.
EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT
EVERYONE EVACUATE YOUR HOMES AND MAKE IT TO THE LAMPLIGHT DOCKS. WASTE NO TIME.
Journal Entry 2/24
Shadow…it…it…it possessed him! Shadow latched onto our first volunteer, giving him a bright purple gaze with shadows wafting off of him! And then he just melted into the shadows and disappeared!
You - ???
“The island has successfully been cleared, thanks to the shadow magic’s host, who, for whatever reason, is calling himself the Puppet Master now.”
Isaac Magicmaster - ???
“Begin colonization. And tell him that name is ridiculous.”
And that…that was the merciless history of the past inhabitants. Willing to fight, surrender, and evacuate to save each other’s lives, only to be wiped out anyway. We, the wizards, drove an entire species into extinction. Honestly, I’m ashamed to even call myself a wizard. We’re monsters, aren’t we? We’re no better than-wait what’s this?
*crinkling of the picking up and gentle smoothing out of old paper*
Journal Entry 5/23
3 ships and 50 emergency boats were prepared at the Lamplight dock. However, only 2 ships and 47 boats were reported destroyed. This means one ship and three boats may have survived! The Prodigians could still be out there somewhere, rebuilding our lives.
Hopeful,
Professor Cole Steel
Elsewhere on another island, far away, a generation of people without any powers are expanding their villages, growing since one incident that nearly drove them into extinction.
The name of their island? Prodig-E
