Post Cladem[]

“It’s him.”

“That monster.”

“How could they let him get away with that?”

Just shut up, please.

My hands twitched around my book. I kept my head down, as though I were reading it.

As though I did not hear the words so blatantly spoken behind my back.

“Why didn’t you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Kill me.”

Distantly, through the crowd of voices, I could hear laughter, rich with joy and belonging and I remembered an invitation to sit with them, but I couldn’t accept.

It was too soon.

Maybe it’d always be too soon.

“It’s just not who I am.”

“But… surely it couldn’t be that difficult.”

“Dylan… even the idea of hurting someone feels like an unforgivable sin. It wouldn’t just be difficult. It would be impossible for me to… to kill someone, intentionally.”

I flipped the page, not actually sure if I read the previous one.

Ah well. Hopefully it wasn’t necessary to pass the test.

“I heard he killed the Wardens.”

“I heard he decapitated Sammy.”

“I heard he murdered our professors.”

“Dylan?”

Startled at hearing someone use my name, I fumbled with my book, nearly dropping it, if not for the pale hand that reached over to catch it, finger sliding in to keep my page.

I tried not to grimace at my clumsiness, and looked up.

And then wished I hadn’t.

Lucas was there, because of course he was, smiling at me with concerned eyes.

The chattering behind my head seemed to stop.

I found that it was nice to not hear those words, for just a moment.

From behind the Warden, I could see the other four approaching, studying me, and I didn’t waste my time searching their eyes for something similar to what was going on in Lucas’, because I knew, I’d killed them, and I knew, I’d never deserve their forgiveness.

Belatedly, I realized that I’d been addressed, and needed to respond, but all I could come up with was an inarticulate, “Um, hi.”

It seemed to be enough however, because the Warden just smiled even wider and glanced down at my book.

Wait, no, don’t look at it–

“You’re taking Storm classes?” His face lit up as he read the cover and I grimaced once again, especially seeing the Storm Warden tilt his head curiously in my direction.

“I know it’s not really for me, but I just– I saw–” I started to protest, but he interrupted.

“That’s amazing! How come I never noticed this?”

Because I didn’t tell you. I wanted to say. Instead, I asked my own question.

“Was there… something you needed from me?” Hopefully I didn’t sound too aggressive.

“Nope!” And I needed to learn how to control my actions, because the surprised lurch I gave upon hearing the Fire Warden speak as opposed to Lucas was probably more embarrassing than almost dropping my book. “There’s nothing novel about hanging out with friends, after all!”

The Storm Warden’s eye twitches, and if I wasn’t so focused on the words just spoken to me, I would have thought that I’d done something to upset the other.

“Actually, we were thinking about using the rest of lunchtime to take a walk around campus.” It was the Water Warden this time, and it really says a lot about me if I’m this happy over only three people talking to me in such a nice manner.

Lucas nodded. “That’s right. We were hoping you could join us?”

He’s… he’s phrased it differently this time.

Not, “Would you like to join us?” or, “Do you want to join us?”

“We were hoping you could join us?”

It almost sounded like they wanted me there.

I said yes, because I didn’t want to disappoint him, and more than that, I wanted to be there too.

But the sharp glares digging into my back as I stood up and walked with them made me feel sick, like a dirty little cheat that didn’t deserve such kind treatment.

And I couldn’t help but feel like they were right.

The next day, I almost jumped a whole foot in the air while sitting down as the Storm Warden walked into the classroom the next day, in the middle of our test.

What are you doing here, you’re not in this class, I wanted to ask him, but I kept quiet.

At least, until he sat down in the chair next to me, grabbed a pencil, and angled his page ever so slightly towards me as he answered the question I had been stuck on for a good ten minutes.

No one noticed him do it– and he sent a little spark towards me each time I tried to ignore him.

He wanted me to copy off of him.

I ended up doing so, near the end of class. No matter what I tried, I couldn't solve it myself.

As we were walking out, I asked him why he would want me to copy his answer and all he told me was that the professors were looking for any excuse to deny me the opportunity of learning Storm magic.

He said he would do whatever he could to not give them that chance.

He promised it, in fact.

I left for my next class with an odd feeling in my chest.
