Faeries, not to be mistaken for Fairies, are a species unnative to the Island of Prodigy and are more commonly known as Unseelie - "evil" faen. They're rare on the island of Prodigy, meaning you should be careful not to overuse Faerie OCs.
Exclusive Vs Common[]
Exclusive sub-species (races) are rarer, meaning they should be used less often as OCs.
Common sub-species are seen and mentioned normally, such as Earth Faeries. You're more likely to come across one than an Exclusive.
Appearance and Ownership[]
A Faerie's appearance depends on what sub-species they are.
Fanon species are marked by their creator as a closed (no one can create one besides the owner), open (anyone can create one), or semi-open (the owner has set rules for using them) species.
If you wish for your fanon species to be added, please comment pining me like so: @Delta.
Exclusive[]
Astral Faerie[]
Astral Faeries commonly have medium skin tone and have long squirrels-like tails. Their tail fur always matches the color of their hair, which ranges from dirty blond to brown. Their wings can be dirty white, dark blue, light brown, or medium yellow. Their eyes are most commonly blue but can be brown or yellow. They have fur along their spine and coating their lower body, strong legs that allow them to jump and climb easily, and their nails are shaped differently, allowing them to grip onto stone or wood as they climb.
They are crepuscular and digitigrades.
Shadow/Dark Faerie[]
Their eyes are a shade of purple, black, or purple-blue. Their hair is normally black, but can be dark brown, dark blue, or dark red depending on the region they are from. Their wings are purple, purple-blue, or black and seem to fade into shadows at the tips. Their tails are black or purple, and are similar to that of a serpent. They have a few scattered scales, reptile-like eyes, and forked tongues, noted for having an accurate sense of smell and sight.
They are nocturnal, and are the species that earned Faerie the title of Unseelie, as unlike Dark Fairies, it does not occur due to a parent's corruption and they are not variants. They are also plantigrades.
Ivory/Albino Faerie[]
tba
Common[]
Earth Faerie[]
They are green or brown in skin tone, and wings vary in color. Their hair is normally brown or green. They have leaf/petal-like scales on their wrists. These scales hide spinnerets. Silk color is unique, and no two faeries have the same shade. Unlike their fairy counterparts, they do have tails. They have two tails, which are long, as well as being silky to the touch. They're normally pastel greens or browns.
Additionally, they have long silky antennae like that of a Moth Fey, are diurnal, and are plantigrades.
Ice Faerie[]
They are fair in skin tone and can have white or blue-ish hair, normally mistaken for ice/snow when they're hiding in snow. Their wings are cloudy and not as transparent, and are white or blue, matching the snow. They have long tails, with thick fur to keep them warm. The fur color usually matches the wings. Their eyes are normally shades of blue or gray. They have claws, as Feral Ice Fairies descended from them, but they lost the ability to shapeshift after the years. They have fur running down their spine and lower body, having cat-like legs designed to run atop the snow. Notably, they are able to concentrate their body heat in their tails, allowing them to trick some of the heat sensing dragons that live in their frigid environment.
Ice Faerie, next to Fire Faerie, are the most territorial species and have incredibly strong instincts. They are digitigrades and crepuscular.
Storm Faerie[]
Storm Faeries normally have a light gray or fair skin tone. Their wings are gray or yellow in coloration and are notably more like a birdwing than an insect wing - being soft to the touch. Unlike their fairy counter-part, they only have one set of wings, and they're also more resistant to electricity - meaning they don't get shocked as easily. They have two tails, which are long and feather-like. Their "plumage" is normally white or gray in color and can fan out, helping them steer. Their eyes are normally gray or amber. Their hair can be blond, gray, or white.
Their "plumage" runs along their spine and is also on their pointed ears. Additionally, they have a slightly larger wingspan then most, often seen gliding on currents rather than actually flying. Their feet are clawed to help them perch and the skin is tougher there.
They are digitigrades and diurnal.
Water Faerie[]
Their top set of wings are thin, while the bottom set is wide. The ridges in their wings contain spines, which slide out when they feel threatened. These spines are venomous and match the wing color. Wings vary in color but can be blue, green, purple, even the white of seafoam. Their wings lighten and darken to match the color of the water they are present in, camouflaging them. Their tails are broad and fin-like, being lightly furred. The fur is typically dark blues or greens. They have the same color scheme as the wings, but can be a different color from their wings. Their hair can be white, gray, murky blond, or light blue. Their skin tone varies.
The main difference between Water Fairies and Faerie is that Water Faeries can breathe underwater. It also takes notably longer for a Water Faerie's wing to dry once wettened, as the wing absorbs water and becomes fin-like, allowing them to swim better.
They also have fin-like structures on their arm and leg joints, and have webbing between their toes and fingers. They are plantigrades and crepuscular.
Fire Faerie[]
Fire Fairies normally have a medium or dark skin tone. Their wings are fire resistant and are often mistaken for flames. They can have red, black, dark blond, or brown hair. Their tails and wings are dragon-like, and they have pointed, scaled ears. Their eyes can be a burning red, orange, brown, yellow, or black. They have scales along the arms, neck, and legs, and tougher skin that doesn't get punctured as easily. Unlike Fire Fairies, they have sharper teeth. They have scales along their spine and coating their lower body, and strong feet and legs made for gripping onto things in flight... as well as fighting. Their feet are clawed, and they have claws on their fingers as well.
It's said that Fire Faerie and Fairy used to crossbreed with dragons, resulting in their appearance. They are diurnal and digitigrades.
Moth Faerie[]
A breed of faeries that live even farther out then those on the elemental islands, having no magic whatsoever. They typically have brown or blonde hair, brown patterned moth-like wings, and two feathery tails similar to Storm Fey. They also have antennae that assist with detecting vibrations, allowing them to navigate in darkness without magic. Their eyes are normally green, brown, or yellow. Their skin is rougher on their wrist where their spinnerets are located, and the silk is normally white or beige.
They are crepuscular and plantigrades.
Desert Faerie[]
A breed of faeries that descended from Sun Faeries. They have foxlike ears and tails, and slim fur going down from their spine to their feet. Their hearing is even better than that of pointed-eared fey, and they have a rather accurate sense of smell. They are carnivorous in nature and are comfortable in desert environments. Their fur is normally tan, golden, or a shade of brown, while their eyes are golden, amber, or yellow. Their wings are very transparent, tinted tan or yellow, and are shaped like a linchen moth's.
They are diurnal and digitigrades.
Abilities and Magic[]
Magic[]
Magic varies depending on their sub-species.
- Earth Faeries - Earth Magic
- Fire Faeries - Fire Magic
- Storm Faeries - Storm Magic
- Ice Faeries - Ice Magic
- Water Faeries - Water Magic
- Astral Faeries - Astral Magic
- Moth Faeries - N/A
- Desert Faeries - Normally N/A, some have Fire or Sun Magic
Ivory/Albino Faeries, unlike Ivory Fairies, only have the magical ability of their subspecies. I.e. an Ivory/Albino Astral Faerie would only have Astral Magic.
Dark Faeries are not variants (unlike Dark Fairies), so they only use Shadow Magic.
Fae/Fey Stepping[]
An ability that Faeries and faeries have triggered by instinct. It causes them to teleport a short distance away, bringing them to safety, or in some cases, behind the opponent for an advantage.
Weather Manipulation[]
Storm Faerie can manipulate the weather, often conjuring wind currents to aid them in flight.
Speed/Agility[]
The faen kind have an incredibly fast nervous system leading to an unspeakable reaction time. This is due to the speed they need to beat their wings at to get off the ground.
Strength[]
Faeries, due to having flight muscles like birds (as well as a differing muscular system than a human being), are twice as strong as a human (wizard).
Flight[]
They have an average wingspan of ten feet as an adult. This allows them to get off the ground, which their flightless counterparts (humans) can only dream of. Their hollow bones also contribute to this. Their wing shape varies per sub-species because of the conditions they have to fly, and generally live in.
Prehensile[]
Faeries are able to use them as a third arm, due to them being prehensile. As not all sub-species have tails and evolved to fly without them, not all species have this ability. Though, sub-species such as Water Faeries wouldn't have a good grip, since their tails are thinner and wouldn't be able to hold larger objects.
Balance[]
Their tails, like that of a cat, help give them with their balance (as well as help steering). When they have tails, they gain cat-like reflexes along with them. Notably, their tails are critical for steering in flight, but the way they do so varies depending on species. For example, Storm Faerie fan out their tails similar to birds, tilting them to steer in flight. Meanwhile, Astral Fey - whose tails originally evolved to help them balance while climbing - use their tails as a counterweight while gliding, forcing their body to make necessary turns.
Hearing[]
Among sub-species that have pointed ears, they're able to pick up sound easily, allowing them to hear better.
Vibrations[]
Moth and Earth Fey can both detect vibrations in the air, fleeing from danger long before it actually comes.
Silk[]
Earth Faeries, like silk touched Earth Fairies, can make silk. This is because the two species used to crossbreed in the past, and some fairies inherited the trait. Moth Faeries can also weave silk.
Darkness' Tongue[]
An ability Dark Faeries have, allowing them to communicate with the beasts of the island, and even tame or lure them. It's necessary for having control over a Titan without mind illusions.
Water Breathing[]
Water Faeries, unlike Water Fairies, can breath underwater, allowing them to live out at sea.
Immunities/Resistance[]
Lava-Immunity[]
Fire Faeries are not burned by fire nor lava.
Storm-Resistance[]
Like their Fairy counterpart, Storm Faeries are resistant to electricity, meaning Storm Magic isn't very effective at its usual... wattage.
Cold-Resistance[]
Ice Faeries aren't bothered by the cold - unless of course, the cold is extreme.
Corruption-Resistance[]
It's notably harder for a Faerie to be corrupted, as they evolved to form a resistance towards it due to how often they fell to that fate.
Shadow's Blessing[]
Dark Faeries are mostly immune to being corrupted by Shadow Magic. Conditions that Shadow Magic usually thrives in don't affect them negatively, and their more adaptive to the dark. As a result, it also allows them to turn into a shadow. It often causes them to have a shifted sleep cycle, napping in the day but active starting at dusk.
Stronger Bones[]
Unlike their seelie counterparts, fae evolved to have stronger bones due to traces of carbon, allowing them to be hollow but retain the same strength of a human bone.
Other Notes[]
Appearance[]
Fur/Scales/Feathers[]
Notably, in species bearing fur/scales/feather, their integuments coat their body more extensively than fey. Instead of simply having tail/ear/spinal integuments, the integuments coat their legs entirely and most of their mid body. It's rare for integuments to extend past the shoulders, but integument on the ears might lightly cover their face.
Weaknesses[]
Humans[]
The Faen kind are often maltreated by humans/wizards, and denied simple rights. They're often taken to granted and are often hunted down or even taken as prisoner due to fairy dust and tears.
Fairy dust, which is a powder created by a Faen's wing and critical to flight (similar to the powder on a butterfly's wing), has the same healing properties that Faen naturally have upon maturing. Fairy dust does not affect the Faen kind in any way other than allowing flight, but has proven to invoke healing in other species.
A Faen's tears are rumored to also hold magical properties, and are used in alchemy and potion brewing, often with little regard to how the substance was obtained.
On top of this, before a faen matures (at age 20), they are liable for falling ill. As they are not welcomed among humans/wizards doctors and such, they have taken to temporarily swapping a faen child, otherwise known as a changeling, with a human/wizard child who has also fallen ill. Using Fairy dust to their advantage, they heal the human/wizard child and swap them back once the faen child has also recovered. On the occasion they are discovered, it never ends well for neither child.
Cold Iron[]
Faen are sensitive to cold iron, and are affected by it in ways ranging from a rash to major burns. Iron has also proven to be a magical insulator towards faen, stopping fey/fae stepping and making magic generally useless on their part.
When the occasion of a changeling occurs, the parenting human/wizard(s) may occasionally go to the extent of torturing the child with an iron poker until they are swapped back (sometimes even proceeding to do so even after they were swapped back). Some take the precaution of placing an iron bar across the top of the crib, making it impossible for the swap to happen without the parenting faen being harmed.
Faen who are enslaved by humans are often punished/kept under control by placing an iron clamp around the base of their wings - making flight impossible, insulating their magic, and generally torturing them.
Wings[]
The wings of a faen are one of the most sensitive areas of their body. Tearing of the wings or crude removal of Fairy dust can affect their ability to fly. The skin around the wings is also slightly softer, making this another weak point. Tearing of the wings (Except in Water & Fire Faeries) will not cause any blood loss unless torn near the base of the wing, but it doesn't affect how painful it would be to do so. Upon being attacked near this weak point, instinct often kicks in causing the fairy in question to act a bit feral during the time they are at risk of becoming flightless.
And injured wing can regenerate depending on how it was torn, but it will scar as the regenerated parts will be lighter in coloration than the original wing. This process can take months or years depending on how much was torn. It is possible for the wing to be torn out in a manner to prevent regeneration, so either way it's best to avoid injuring the wing.
A faen's wing can also absorb water and most liquids, similar to feather or butterfly wing. This makes the wing too heavy and soft for flight until it dries out, causing getting wet to be something a faen would avoid unless bathing. Water Faeries' wings moisturize the fastest and take weeks to fully dry, while Fire Faeries takes the longest to moisten and are quick to dry. However, the quickest to dry are the wings of Earth and Moth Fae. Like butterflies, Faen produce a "powder" on their wings. In the case of butterflies (and moths), they can shed this powder—which are actually scales—to immediately dry their wings, and have multiple layers they can use before they have to wait. In the case of Faen, in most species the power (Fey Dust) is too fine for it to be shed as a defense mechanism, but in Earth and Moth Fae, the wing scales are large enough to be shed for this purpose.
Fae have the same wingspans as Fey.
Air Quality[]
Faen, albeit being able to handle the thin air of the upper atmosphere, are actually very sensitive to the air quality at ground level. They are liable to asthma attacks as they aren't used to the high amounts of oxygen and will find themselves having trouble breathing. Exerting themselves at ground level is harmful, leading to them preferring living high above ground are incredibly below sea level, in which where the air quality is also poor (towards the human opinion).
Water Faen are an exception to this, as they're used to living in aquatic/semi-aquatic environments and are able to handle the shifts in air quality. Astral Faen and Earth Faen are other exceptions, as they're low fliers and used to oxygen rich air.
Illnesses & Deformities[]
Faen have an incredibly strong immune system, making it uncommon for them to fall ill. However, their immune system is weaker before reaching the age of 20 and it's normal for younger fae to fall ill to cold, fever, etc. Certain conditions, like malnutrition, hypothermia, dehydration, etc can lower a faen's immune system enough that illnesses may bypass it, allowing even adult fey to become ill. Additionally, it's possible for Faen to fall ill to genetic or mutation based inflictions (cancer, etc) no matter how strong their immune system might be.
Deformities are similar to humans, but they do have a few that are unique to them:
Subalis[]
A condition where the wings develop below the skin (and never protrude) causing the said fae to be "wingless." It's not painful, but in those who have it, they might feel "stiff" and unable to perform some movements normally.
An OC with this deformity is Cria, mentioned in Smart-Alecky,
Scinditur cauda[]
A condition where the tail splits into two separate limbs. This might occur at the base of the tail, leading to the illusion of having two separate tails similar to Storm Fey. This can also occur midway, leading to the appearance of an Espeon (Pokémon) tail. Most commonly seen in Ivory Fey, the tail can split at the very tip; however this is not considered an actually case of the deformity as it happens so often.
An OC with this deformity is Naloc, mentioned in The Faen Wind.
Carent nervi[]
A condition in which one lacks the additional nerve endings needed for magic. This can occur in not only Faen, but other magical species, and can quickly render some races defenseless.
There are multiple OCs with this condition, some which are not Fae:
- Rai is a fey who uses a Warden Keystone to accommodate in the Return of the Wardens series.
- Spark is a shapeshifter who experiences a partial case this condition, and is capable of producing small sparks of magic (hence his name) in the Return of the Wardens series.
This condition is most common among Desert Fae.
Carent unguis[]
A deformity unique to clawed species in which they are born "lacking" claws. In reality, the bones in their hands are mispositioned, resulting in their claws being buried in their skin. This is especially painful in Ice Faen who can have retractable claws, as they can still "retract" them within the skin and cause internal damage. Pressure on the fingertips and claw growth can invoke pain on those with the condition. It's been theorized that the condition occurs due to their more humanoid structure.
An OC with this deformity is Gale Starheart, from the Return of the Wardens series.
Trivia[]
- Notably, because of them being used to living in environments with thin air, they have a different nose shape them humans, being flatter and quite similar to that of a Na'vi. They also have larger lungs then humans, and consequently because of that, a larger chest.
- Their ancestor, Faen, were actually animal-like humanoids. The reason they evolved to be more human-like rather than simply human was partially due to breeding with humans and partially due to the fact early humans were more reluctant to kill Faen that looked like them versus those that looked like animals. Eventually Faen - due to natural selection - evolved to look like modern day Fae. Migration of some Faen from the Island of Prodigy to the element islands cut them off from humans, and as result, they had no need to evolve further, staying mostly the same from that point forth.
