Why are all of the stories written like they're using modern tech?

Don't get me wrong, the stories I've read are pretty well written, actually. It's just that some stories barely even HAVE magic. Also, it's pretty funny that some of the stories are real bloody since this is Prodigy math game, the game where you do math to knock out or free wild animals. Not throwing any hate around, the stories are very well written.
