I’ve been playing a lot of Double Dragon lately, while thinking of Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, and I got an idea for some sort of arcade/home console game, starring 2 of my most stupid and useless OCs ever.
I give you…
Mission Week
Overview[]
So, yeah, Mission Week is a 2 player game featuring Kobe and Max, the former being the player one, and the latter being player two. It will be a beat-em-up game, with some fighting game elements.
Basically, the game is gonna be composed of 10 stages, all of them taking place over the course of a week.
I’d say the art would be sprite art.
Game Modes[]
The HUD stays the same between modes. Basically, in the top left corner will be your health bar, which would change different colors depending on your health. It is 4 bars in total, all stacked on top of each other, with the bar behind being more revealed as you take more damage. The bar order goes, blue, green, orange, red. Above that is your money. On the bottom left corner would be your energy meter, which dictates how much you can use your special moves. There are 4 bars, all side by side. Above that are your lives.
Beat ‘em Up Mode[]
The Beat ‘em Up mode forms the most of the gameplay of Mission Week. Basically, you control the character(s) as they move on a 2D plane. Basically, you can move in 2 directions, and you can attack both left and right. Over the course of the stages, you can collect multiple items, some boosting your health, and others boosting your energy level. There are specific items used for increasing your health. In the menu, there’s an option to either do play as a single character, or use them both in a tag team fashion.
One-on-One Mode[]
One-on-One mode is basically sort of like a fighting game. You fight on a 2D plane, and the HUD stays the same (except for the fact that lives have been removed). Your moves have also been altered slightly. If you’re playing One-on-One mode in the story mode, while in 2 player mode, the 2 players act as a tag team.
Controls[]
In order to get a proper handle on the gameplay, we need to know about the controls.
Usually I would use an Xbox controller as an example, but I don’t feel like it. This is meant to be imagined as a game ported to both arcade and home console, so just using Xbox controls wouldn’t feel right. So I’ll just make a bulletin list of all the buttons.
- Punch
- Kick
- Jump
- Special
There are certain commands that depends on what mode you’re playing, so I’ll go over that now.
Beat ‘em Up Mode[]
(X)+(Y) = press the buttons together
(X) -> (Y) = Press the first button, then the second button
Punch+Kick = Back Attack
Punch -> Right -> Punch = Throw
Jump+Kick = Anti Air
Jump -> Kick = Air Heavy
Jump -> Punch = Air Light
Punch+Special = Mega Attack (Takes one bar of your special meter)
Not the most complex, but whatever.
One-on-One Mode[]
Punch+Kick = Grab (press left or right after the grab to throw in a direction)
Down+Kick = Sweep (the knockdown is sort of delayed, leaving room for follow up attacks before the opponent hits the ground)
Jump+Kick = Anti Air
Jump -> Kick = Meteor Attack (Axe Kick)
Jump -> Punch = Air Light (Swift Punch)
Punch+Special = Ultimate Attack (Uses all 4 bars of your special meter)
Slightly more complex, I guess.
Now, before I get into the story, I guess I’ll go over the differences between Kobe and Max.
Character Differences[]
While I will introduce more characters (wink wink nudge nudge), I’ll only talk about the differences between Max and Kobe.
Kobe[]
I guess I’ll go over how his moves look before I go over the little stuff that separates him from Max.
Beat ‘em Up Mode[]
Punches: He performs a 4 hit combo, where he performs a jab, a cross, a stab with his dagger, before performing an uppercut.
Kicks: He performs a 3 hit combo, where he performs a front snap kick, which transitions into an axe kick, before ending with a spinning back kick.
Special (Thundershock): Kobe points his finger forwards, signaling to Cloud Neek, who’s on his shoulder, to zap the enemy. If the bar is only filled up to the first 2, then it’ll be a fireball looking thing. If the bar is filled to the later 2, it’ll look like a beam. As the attack charges, Kobe looks angrier and angrier before pointing his finger forwards.
Throw: A double roll tomoe nage, akin to Ken’s Hell Wheel.
Mega Attack (Dagger Drill): Kobe launches himself forwards headfirst while spinning, and sticking his daggers out forwards in a physics defying fashion, similar to Raphael’s Power Drill from the Tournament Fighters games.
One-on-One Mode[]
Punches: He performs a 4 hit combo, where he performs a jab, a cross, a stab with his dagger, and a slice with his dagger.
Kicks: He performs a 3 hit combo, where he performs a front snap kick, which transitions into an axe kick, before ending with a side kick.
Unlike in Beat ‘em Up Mode, he can throw the opponent while in the air, and is one of the only characters that can do so.
Ultimate Attack (Raging Slam): Kobe, in a cartoonish fashion, has his eyes and fists set on fire as he flies at the opponent, and after 2 flips, and slams his fist at them for multiple hits. The attack can only be used in mid air, but automatically sends him towards the opponent.
Victory Pose: Kobe does two punches, daggers in hand, before raising his right fist in the air, and saying, “Feel my might!”. Cloud Neek starts cheering, too.
Aesthetic Stuff[]
- Kobe’s attack speed is slower than Max’s, but has more power behind his attacks.
- There’s a 1 in 3 chance of Kobe curling up in a ball as he jumps. This can cause some damage. He only curls up into a ball at the top of his jump arc, though.
- Kobe has a ‘rage’ mechanic, so on his last bar of health, his damage doubles.
- Most of this stuff is Beat ‘em Up only for sake of balancing.
Max[]
Beat ‘em Up Mode[]
Punches: A 5 hit combo, where he swings his nunchucks up, down, left and right before ending his combo by whirling his nunchucks up in the air.
Kicks: A 4 hit combo where he does a side kick, back kick, crescent kick, and ending with a jump kick that doesn’t exactly leave the ground from a gameplay point.
Throw: Max grabs his opponent by the shirt, before head butting them, and whacking them away with his rocket board.
Special (Mutant Slam): Max slams his fists onto the ground, creating a green shockwave. The shockwave reaches as high as Kobe’s thunder shock, but it’s not as strong. As Max is charging the move, he raises his hands above his head, his fists glowing a progressively brighter green as the bar fills up.
Mega Attack (Progressing Kick): Max flies at his opponent, kicking them multiple times in a bicycle-like motion, like Liu Kang’s Bicycle Kick.
One-on-One Mode[]
Punches: A 5 hit combo, where he swings his nunchucks up, down, left and right before ending his combo by whirling his nunchucks towards the opponent.

As Max is charging the move, he raises his hands above his head, his fists glowing a progressively brighter green as the bar fills up.
Ultimate Attack (Mutant Fury): Max glows green, before firing a huge Ion Cannon at the opponent, only without any electricity coming from it.
Victory Pose: Max does a flip in the air, before whirling his nunchucks around, saying, “Cowabunga!”. In two player beat em up mode, both he and Kobe say this.
Asthetic Stuff[]
- Max has a faster attack speed than Kobe, and has more combo potential, but his attacks do less damage.
- Max has a 1 in 2 chance of saying “Pizza time!” Every time he picks up a healing item. Speaking of which…
Items[]
Apple: Heals 25% of one bar of health.
Pizza: Heals 50% of one bar of health.
Party Pizza: A bigger pizza that heals both players. It can only be found in 2 player mode.
Chicken Bucket: Refills all health. Both Kobe and Max say different lines when picking this up. Kobe says, “Finally, we’re starving!”, and Max says, “Chicken in a bucket!”
Super Stamina Drink: Increases your maximum health by one bar.
Hyper Power Drink: Increases your maximum energy by one bar.
Bonfire Reaper Pizza: Automatically fills up one bar of energy for 30 seconds. Ideally, this means that you don’t have to wait for the energy bar to fill before firing a special attack. It also raises your attack power by 20%.
One-Up: Self explanatory. It’s a shard of some gem, presumably of magic origin.
Enemy Types[]
Seeing as how this is a game meant to span over multiple universes and dimensions, I’ll just go over enemy types rather than every enemy in the game.
Melee: These guys use melee weapons, and hand-to-hand combat in order to take down the opponent.
Gunner/Ranged: These guys use long range weapons to take down players.
Beast: These guys use biting attacks, and claw attacks. These guys seem like they go under melee, but they tend to move in leaps, and quadruped foes can use a biting grab attack.
Flight: These guys can be either melee or gunner, all that matters is that they fly.
Thrower: They tend to attack with grapples, and can also throw the opponent.
Stages[]
I guess I’ll go over the cutscene format first. First, there’s Static Cutscenes, where there are anime-styled images of the characters doing stuff. Then, there’s In Game Cutscenes, where the character sprites and in game backgrounds are used. The characters talking are represented by speech bubbles. If you’re playing one player mode during in game cutscenes, the second player will run out from the back of the screen until the cutscene ends.
Stage 1: Kobe’s Forest[]
*Static Cutscene Starts*
Music: DBGT Transformation Cinematic Theme
*Kobe and Max are watching TV in Max’s sewer lair*
Kobe: This show sucks. All the characters are @$$holes so much to the point where they look as bad as the legitimately bad person who committed a real crime.
Max: Well it’s not like I can get satellite TV under the ground.
Kobe: You do. Ben treats you better than he treats me.
Max: Oh yeah, right.
*Ben calls Kobe*
Ben: I need you two at the lab, pronto!
Kobe: What for?
Ben: No time to explain, just get here now!
Max: Well, you heard him, let’s go!
*Kobe and Max leave the lair*
*Static Cutscene Ends*
Music: Goku’s House
The stage starts with Kobe/Max exiting a manhole in Lamplight Town. Luckily for Kobe (if you’re playing as him), nobody’s around. At first, you progress through the level, quickly making your way into a forest, as you get attacked by wild animals. Then, as you go even deeper into the forest, you start encountering mutant fruit, robots, and ninjas. Then, when you get to the three that Kobe and Cloud Neek sleep at, there’s a mini boss.
The mini boss is an assassin.
*In Game Cutscene Starts*
Kobe: Who the hell are you?
Assassin: I have been instructed by Benjamin Firestorm to take you out!
Kobe: Right, of course.
Max: Huh, I thought that was the pizza guy.
Kobe: Dumb@$$.
*In Game Cutscene Ends*
After fighting the assassin, you continue onwards, until you stop seeing trees for a short bit, before running back into another forest, and arriving at Ben’s lab, where he’s drunk out of his mind. This starts another boss fight where you beat up Ben, before he goes back to normal, because that’s totally how being drunk works. The lesson here is that if you beat up drunk people, everything turns out good (/s).
*Static Cutscene Starts*
Music: DBGT Transformation Cinematic Theme
Kobe: Damn it, Uncle Ben. Don’t make me throw out your beer again.
Ben: Well, you took too long, so I started drinking.
Kobe: Whatever, whaddaya want?
Ben: Well, you two guys need to go on another mission.
Max: Cool. Where to?
Ben: Well, in another dimension, there’s some people trying to murder some politician. Go stop them or I’m gonna rob you in your sleep.
Kobe: I guess we’re on it…
Ben: *fires rift into wall*
Ben: Hop to it!
Kobe and Max: *Leap in*
*Static Cutscene Ends*
Stage 2: Fight the Power, or Die[]
*Static Cutscene Starts*
Music: A Clumsy Experiment
Kobe: What luck, we warped into the front of the city hall.
Max: Gee, I hope they have some food here. I’m starving.
Kobe: Let’s just go stop these killer guys.
*Static Cutscene Ends*
You start at the front door the city hall. You run forwards, only to find nobody, until they found a guy in an all white uniform.
*In Game Cutscene Starts*
Mook (on the phone): Alright, boss, me, Vinny and the others are inside. We’ve got the super weapons, and we’re gonna kill Mayor McDowford in 10 to 12 minutes.
Kobe: Oh, that’s funny. We were summoned to stop you from killing Mayor McDonald.
Mook: Oh sh*t! How much did you hear?!
Max: Uhh, something about a super weapon, 10 to 12 minutes, and some dude named Vinny.
Mook: *runs away*
Kobe: Hey! Let’s get him!
*In Game Cutscene Ends*
Music: Rescue
So, you go into this joint, fighting off people who are also wearing all white uniforms. Most of them are Melee types, but some are Gunner types. You have to go up 3 floors in order to get to the Mayor’s Office, but by the second floor, you start seeing some of the super weapons. One of them is a large laser that will blast at the player. However, the laser blast itself is easy to jump over, and it can’t operate without a Mook behind it. You can either defeat the mook before he fires the machine, or destroy the machine itself with gives 1000 points when destroyed.
By the third floor, there are more enemies, but they are sort of weaker to take the load off. Then, when you reach the mayor’s office, there’s a thug blocking the door.
*In Game Cutscene Starts*
Thug: Are you a member of the Clear Elite?
Max: Uhh, no.
Thug: Then I can’t let you in.
Kobe: Let us in, or I’ll sic my little friend on you.
Thug: What’s an ice cream cone gonna do?
Cloud Neek: *snarls*
Thug: *leaps up in fear*
Thug: Okay, I’ll let you in!
Thug: *runs away*
Kobe: Wow. I didn’t even have to send him off my shoulder.
*In Game Cutscene Ends*
So, you go into the room, and find a brown haired guy with a domino mask, with a huge hi tech bomb on the mayor’s desk, with Mayor McDowford tied up. The dude in the domino mask was Vinny, who was leading this operation.
*Static Cutscene Starts*
Vinny: Now, Mr. Mayor. You can either step down from your position and let the Clear Elite run things in this city, or we blow you to pieces.
Mayor: What about my reelection campaign do you not like? I’m lowering taxes, adding more soup kitchens for the homeless, pouring some of my own personal money into projects that will benefit the community, and adding more pizza restaurants!
Vinny: We reject your authority! We hate it, so we’re going to run things from here on.
Max: You hate authority, so you’re becoming the new authority?
Kobe: And I thought that my motivations for disobeying authority was downright asinine.
Vinny: Dammit, shut up and die!
*Static Cutscene Ends*
